it definitely was for a long time, Ted Lasso, Trying, Mythic Quest, Servant, For All Mankind, all really really great right at the start, but the last year or two I haven't watched a ton of NEW shows on there, Silo & Shrinking are the most recent really great ones to me

my main issue is that it doesn't have the same depth of catalog of older shows as Peacock, Paramount, Hulu, etc

I don't think I even paid for TV+ for a year or maybe longer after it launched because they were doing that "buy a new iphone get a free year" thing with it

I guess you could also say that deep back catalog isn't worth anything if you don't make the time to watch those shows too so idk maybe Dave wins

As much as people rag on it for being a low-tier streamer who is in financial trouble, I probably find myself watching Paramount + with Showtime more often than any other streamer.

All the Star Treks is great, CBS News does good stuff, hands down the best streamer for classic TV, all the A24s is cool, great fun dumb guy shows, they have probably the single largest streaming collection of stand up comedy, all the TMNTs is sick, all the 90's Nick shows is great nostalgia. The Smithsonian Network is better educational TV than NatGeo or Discovery

  8. Disney+ (w/ Hulu bundle) for Marvel, Max for DC, use my brother's Netflix. Anything else I only get with promo discount.

  9. Disney for the kids, Hulu because it’s like a dollar extra with my Spotify account, and max. That’s where I’m at.

Oh yeah, have D+ too. That might be next to go. The price increase on that seems much more steep than others.

Apple has a few new shows I’m looking forward to so I’ll hold off on cancelling.

I just completely forget Apple TV+ is a thing most of the time. It has some shows I'm definitely in, I just have this weird blindspot where it doesnt feel like a real thing lol

Yeah I barely watch Apple TV+, except for like once a quarter they will have a show I like. I mainly keep it for the shows that haven't aired yet.

Is America/Americans the clear protagonists in For All Mankind? I’ve heard it’s good but just knowing the basic plot I don’t really care for a show about what if America was the underdog watch them go and overcome

Netflix is by far the worst one and with how expensive it is you could cancel it and pay for two other services or save yourself a good chunk

All of the main characters are Americans, yeah, but I think it handles "being second" a lot more nuanced than that. It challenges a lot of the sexism of the time, handles racism and LGBTQ issues, how technology would've been different if the space race was more competitive, etc. It definitely carries US vs Russia at the heart of it, but doesn't feel Cold War propaganda-y? (At least to me.) And most of the American characters are very much... not perfect/not framed as heroes.

  23. It's one of my favorite shows, so my analysis might be a bit clouded by how much I just love watching it. Americans are the protagonists, but I think they're written with enough conflict and nuance that it doesn't feel too "rah rah America" or anything. Certainly better than Jack Ryan or whatever.

Apple TV+ raising those prices because they know every dad is gonna be in for that new “Band of Brothers”-type war show.
