I agree with this 99.9% of the time but I just can not get over how Take the Sadness out of Saturday Night sounds lol

Edit: I should clarify too that I don’t believe he did a bad job with it. I’m sure it sounds exactly as he wants. So my trouble is more with the decisions than the execution.

  2. Yeah, that’s probably true and fair.

I think I’d be more interested in someone saying “I like when a song sounds like it was recorded in a big room” and references like a Thrice song or something. But the “so and so sucks at the thing they do and get paid big bucks to be one of the actual best in the world at” stuff grates on me more and more as I age. I’d buy an argument that people wish Blink didn’t try and make their songs sound like what’s popular right now, I’d probably argue that’s the band from day one and this version of what’s popular is to what was happening on early albums too (but when you’re young you don’t know that).

And now I’m just going on about my current least favorite music trend and production talk lol. I should stop.

  3. Hahaha. I was more referring to everything else he produces. But I do totally agree with that. IMO that’s where I start thinking about intentionality and why the artist made those choices. What was the reason and what were they trying to get out of the song/art by doing it that way. And sometimes I totally disagree with their choices. But I wouldn’t then try and go clean up Jack’s album and be like “fixed it” - haha.

The choices on that one still baffle me though as anything besides him doing it as a direct response to the criticisms or something.

Hah you got me like 2 seconds before I edited my post to clarify that I’m sure it sounds exactly like he wants. I just do not get the choices for the life of me.

  5. I guess production and the music go hand in hand in my mind, and showing criticism/praise for one is unquestionably as valid for one as it is the other. It feels very natural that a part of discussing music would be the way that it… sounds. I wouldn’t find it odd for someone to like a movie but dislike the lighting and respond with “oh you think you’d do better?”

    Things have changed.

    A completely serious Reddit topic:

"Blinkwave has a Lifeforms sound… is the song title an intentional mashup of BLINKangelsandairWAVEs?"

  7. I will say Aaron's explanation of the OMT first verse did quite literally change my perspective on the whole album (even though I still do not enjoy that song). You make a good point that touches on this - blink records have always sounded mainstream, or at least tried to. There are moments where that comes across on the full LP better than others, I love when they really crank it up at the end of Childhood. I've always had a guilty pleasure for how "overdone" it was on The Mark Tom and Travis show also.

  8. I would if they were criticizing Jeff Cronenweth and can’t explain, to someone of his knowledge and stature, how to do it better. I dunno, maybe I trust SME’s more than I should.

Yeah there’s AI apps to try and isolate instruments. Some of them are decent but in the context of trying to learn songs

I commented on that Reddit drum post. The original sounds beefy and full, his version sounds weak and glitchy… I told him.. will probably get downvoted.

  11. Someone’s gonna have AI sing on some fucking Beatles song that never had John’s voice before I die. This is where this goes isn’t it? Haha.

My production take: this is the best album Travis has ever produced and while I was always interested in what he was doing musically, this album has me fully invested in him as a producer

i have no issues with the production on this other than the remix of "edging" which is inexplicable

i can think of two major rock producers whose records always sound like shit (rick rubin and jacknife lee) and this blink album is nowhere near that level. the drums are loud but it doesn't keep me from hearing anything else

Remix of edging? Isn’t this the same as the one they dropped originally?

A blink fan that doesn’t want to hear Travis’s drums in their full glory is no fan at all

this did come up ages ago in the blink thread but: no, it sounds kinda like they rerecorded it in an airplane hangar, i'm not too bugged by it but i do think it sounds markedly worse lol

Travis very clearly went for a maximalist and modern production style. And I really love it, actually.

Just played them back to back on Spotify. They’re literally the same. Turn off your Dolby atmos.
