    Are You Watching Closely?

There some DollarStoreSaints up in this place.
    Mines the 25. :(

Edit: says it left at 6 this morning from Virginia (I'm in TX), so hoping I get lucky and it comes in before Wednesday. 6 days for that trip sounds ridiculous

Dude, same. It honestly irritates me. Been a musician for 20 years. I love analyzing songs for cool little tricks and digging into the theory behind them.......yet "Pin The Grenade" still fucks me up. I know what's going on on an objective level but my brain is still tricked by the syncopated version of the drumbeat in the first verse. I can never find the "one" beat.

But also, I think I could pretty easily play that song on drums by literally playing what I hear instead of playing what feels right. haha.

    cool dogs

I was actually curious and went to go look at some drum covers to see how other's played it, and this is the only one that kind of made it make sense to me, because he just keeps playing the drum riff the same without stopping for the gap

but still, I don't think it's ever going to not feel a bit "off" when I just listen to the song by itself though haha

Haha yeah, it's still always going to feel off to me I think.

So, what's going on technically there is that the hit of the kick that you mentioned (the hit that isn't in the ACTUAL song but is the way the guy in the cover plays it) is actually the 1 beat. So that's why hearing that one extra hit helps your brain make sense of it.

The entire "trick" Travis is using there is hiding the 1 beat - the first drum hit of the song is on the "and" after the one so you never even hear the actual start of the measure. That's why my brain gets lost there, it doesn't know where the start of each bar actually is.

When they get to the second verse, Travis plays the same exact pattern as the first, but shifts the entire pattern back one-half beat. So now the triplet down the toms IS the start of the measure so it makes 1000x more sense in your brain than in the first verse lol.

Finally got to listen this morning! It was killing me staying out of these threads yesterday, but I'm going to read through them today and like a bunch of posts, so be ready.

This album rules! I'm so happy it exists. A few mastering/production choices I'm not in love with, but a bunch that I am.

    • Anthem Pt. 3 is great. Will it top the other 3 parts? Only time will tell.
    • Dance With Me continues to kick as much ass today as it did the first day I heard it. One of my favs on the album for sure.
    • Fell In Love is fun!
    • Terrified has that big Snake Charmer/Obvious style Tom chorus and I dig it a lot.
    • One More Time is incredible.
    • More Than You Know fits so well in the running order. It's a great song on its own, but I love how it sonically represents most of the album.
    • Turn This Off! is fine.
    • When We Were Young is excellent.
    • Edging is still super fun.
    • You Don't Know What You've Got is full of a gravitas I never really expected to get from the band again. Sure they have lots of cheesy lyrics across their entire discography, but when they decide to go for the heart they do not pull punches.
    • Blink Wave is awesome. I LOVE that synth in the chorus.
    • Bad News immediately stood out as one of the strongest songs on the album. It's a little too short, but it reminds me of Go, which I've always loved.
    • Hurt made me laugh when I realized that Tom was singing the word "hurt."
    • Turpentine also made me laugh. And it rules.
    • Fuck Face is fine.
    • Other Side is yet another late-album Mark banger. I dig it a lot.
    • Childhood is good! I do NOT like the super autotuned descent of Tom's vocals in the chorus. But it was obviously an intentional choice and I'm sure after a few listens I'll either come around on it or learn to ignore it.

I wish that the drums weren't so loud at certain parts. There's some sections where the cymbals wash out all guitar and the intensity of the kick drum pushes against the vocal. But when they aren't pushing the loudness scale, they actually sound quite good. I especially like the intro of You Don't Know What You've Got.

    Thanks everyone who messaged me!

Question to the thread: every version of this link I've been sent seems to want me to open a flash player on mac? Is that supposed to happen?

My cars don't have 3.5mm jacks anymore, so I've resorted to USB sticks. I can't stand ads so I'd much rather buy my own music, old school style...

yeah i just use a usb cable for the ipod. I found it sounds better than the audio jack! I remember way back when, i used one of the fm transmitters for my ipod mini. Didn’t sound great but was a cool wireless option!

My reaction video got blocked by youtube due to copyright...I thought you could use copyrighted songs as long as it's not monetized?

Maybe have to wait until the record releases? Anyone know about this stuff?

i imagine if the label saw their still unreleased album streaming on youtube they can have it pulled down regardless of monetization.

I didn't let every song play all the way through for that reason, tried to chop it up a bit - oh well, I'll re-upload tonight at 12am EST
