What's tough for the Fed is that they have a very complex problem—inflation—to solve, but are only given one tool to fight it—rate hikes. It's like trying to build a house with a single hammer. Congress won't work with them, so they have to just keep hammering away until they solve the problem that's been handed to them. Ideally these rate hikes would be paired with legislation that helps ease the burden (like a first-time homebuyers credit to offset the high interest), but that ain't happening.
