It is a great track, but something about the context of it within the album has always bothered me. It belongs, just not in its current spot IMO. I haven't bothered trying to place it elsewhere in the album. I usually seek out My Blue Heaven specifically if i want to hear it.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and I made a "fantasy album" playlist that works in tracks from the first Straylight Run record. I think it makes for a better front-to-back listen in my old age, and maybe even a case for giving John a few lead vocals per album. That said, I feel like my younger self would have found it a bit boring. Alas!

    1) Set Phasers to Stun
    2) Bonus Mosh Pt. II
    3) Mistakes We Knew We Were Making [Straylight Run]
    4) A Decade Under the Influence
    5) Existentialism on Prom Night [Straylight Run]
    6) The Union
    7) It's for the Best [Straylight Run]
    8) One-Eighty by Summer
    9) Number Five with a Bullet
    10) Your Name Here (Sunrise Highway) [Straylight Run]
    11) ...Slowdance on the Inside

    Playlist: Spotify / Apple Music

    Here's my reasoning:

    - Starting with WYWTB, every TBS album has had 11 tracks except Tidal Wave.

    - Tracks 1, 4, and 8 are the WYWTB tracks that the John & Shaun lineup has most consistently played live since reuniting. Track 9 is a close 4th.

    - Tracks 5 and 10 are the only Straylight Run tracks that TBS has played live.

    - Tracks 3 and 7 were included on the original Straylight Run demo, which was recorded with TBS's drummer before Will Noon joined the band.

    - Track 11 was apparently worked on while John & Shaun were still in TBS.

    - Tracks 2 and 6 were personal choices. "Bonus Mosh" sounds a lot like the first album to my ears, and "The Union" gives this "album" a good pop of energy in the middle that I thought it needed.

Anyways, food for thought. Hope you enjoy!

Same, could never get into that one.

First 4 tracks + 180/Number 5/Slowdance make it my favorite TBS album. 180 is probably my favorite song of theirs

WYWTB is still my favorite of theirs. It still has the youthful energy of TAYF, but the songwriting feels more refined. Fred and Matt added a ton to the band's sound as well. The instrumentals sound so much more full, like they fill the room, but they still have a raw edge to them. I still really like Louder Now, but it has always sounded a hair too clean cut in comparison to the first two.

Plus is has 180, which still stands up as one of my favorite songs. Not just by them, but in general.

Do they have bad blood with TBS? Or is this just related to all the shit I read about in the book about them being shitty to their bands in certain ways? lol

They should go on a Tell All Your Friends tour to celebrate.

(I'm joking, that's real nice that happened to them)

  14. i was told they literally held the accounting back to not let it get certified for years. I know zero former bands with good victory blood.

Maybe that chapter helped him realize that it everyone hates you, you’re probably the problem. Maybe he found some regrets?

I find TAYF to be almost an unbearable listen at this point but WYWTB still hits hard, I think it’s hands down their best work as a band and, in a just world, it would be the album we’re inundated with anniversary tours for.

I can’t imagine throwing on TAYF and not screaming along to every word, being filled with memories and nostalgia. Well, I take that back. If you listened to it 20 years ago, I stand by it. I couldn’t imagine writing it off. It was an important album for the scene. But if someone listened to it after hearing the other albums, or wasn’t around in those early years, I get that it may not be as special or significant to them. The rougher production and more basic song writing may not hit as hard. For me, I’ll throw it on sing just the John parts and just lose myself.

My first deep dive into TBs was the compilation Notes From The Past that I got from Walmart, which I didn’t realize was a complication for a while. That was relatively early in my scene days so the rawer sound of TAYF when I eventually did listen to it in full didn’t resonate with me at all aside from the few tracks I mentioned earlier. Never really overcame that bias, as WYWTB still floors me.

I also got into louder now pretty late and while I like every song on the record, it never stuck with me very well until way later. my mind treated it like an album full of b-sides for a long time, which makes no sense now and I love it through and through.

I remember on my first listen to Louder Now I thought how good the production was in comparison to the first two albums….that’s what that big WB money will get you

That Victory stuff doesn’t really surprise me. I find it hard to believe TAYF didn’t surpass 1 million sales like 10 years ago

Don't recreate the scene, or reinvent the meanings Supporter

Craft Recordings/Fantasy Records are both under the Concord umbrella and are just handling things as they should more than anything I bet. It’s unreal the stuff Victory was pulling for so long.

TAYF going platinum is very heartwarming to me. It was such a pivotal album in so many ways, totally deserved.
