I’m going in blind and that first episode threw all kinds of curves at me

Started watching Moriarty The Patriot again after a long break and I love how at the start of Season 2 Episode 5, Inspector Lestrade makes an entire elaborate puppet show to convince Sherlock to help him with a case, and Holmes just replies "No", no hesitation.

Decided to give the Jujutsu Kaisen manga another shot and apparently I had stopped just before the Shibuya arc. I've since burned through about 30 chapters in the past few days. It's an absolutely phenomenal arc and I can't wait to see where it goes!

Yo - need some pretty basic recommendations as I'm a n00b.

I loved the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, and am looking for something along the lines of that and below is what I liked about it to help hone in. I have Netflix / Max / Peacock / Prime for streaming services.

    - Grounded (sci fi vs fantasy but I'm not exclusively looking for sci fi - i just don't want a fantastical anime)
    - Good group of characters (mix of male and female, heroes and villains).
    - Great action and well animated violence / fight scenes
    - Strong emotional core
    - Short and sweet (20-30 min episodes - 1 season arc - I wouldn't mind a multi season show, but I don't want anything too complicated to get into it, so definitely not something that's like 200 episodes deep).
    - Non episodic - I don't want a story of the week type deal, I want a connecting plot that runs through the season.
    - Doesn't matter how new or old - I am very new to this genre and am fine going all the way back to the 'classics'.

Thank you to anyone who can help!

    Have you seen Evangelion?

There's also Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill by the same director as Edgerunners but they're maybe slightly more fantastical but they're definitely not like full on fantasy. Both are brilliant.

steins;gate. A group of friends accidentally discover a way to send messages through time. Things get weird. There’s some action scenes but it’s not an action heavy show. One of the greatest anime’s of all time in my opinion. Two 24 episode seasons, but the first season is self contained in a way.

also yeah, Evangelion is actually the GOAT

  8. I missed the SAO discussion? I've never seen SAO but I've heard it's not very good. but what interests me is that it's a lot of people's starter anime. You can usually kinda guess how old someone is based on what their starter anime is. Mine was RK (which is why that shit about its mangaka is so unfortunate), I think the generation after that was Bleach/Naruto, and some time after that it was AoT/MHA

I'd say my first anime was Pokemon but Dragon Ball Z was my first real love. Death Note was probably the first thing I watched that I actually knew was anime though and started my interest in exploring more.

Mine was probably DBZ, maybe Pokémon. Than anything that was on OG Toonami. Cardcaptors, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing

I have not and it sounds like something I'll give a try (Evangelion). Subs or dubs? I think I am leaning towards subs as I'm used to that from Squid Game.

Cowboy Bebop dub is better. And Goku's English voice. That's about it

I've heard a lot of people love the Bebop dub but to me it's as grating as most dubs. I still much prefer the Japanese voices.

I think the only dubs I prefer are stuff like Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, YuGiOh that I grew up with and Panty and Stocking.

I don't have anime experience, but I like subs for movies / live action shows as when it lines up (sound to mouth movement), it just makes the acting seem better. I also like that it's a forced reason to put the phone down, close the laptop etc and actually watch.

I'm going through the original Dragon Ball now and watching it with dubs because it's not worth devoting my entire attention to, it's more something to put on in the background lol

I'm fairly new myself, only been really into anime for a couple years now at this point. MAL is a pretty great site for finding similar stuff to what you already like. Worth making an account or at least browsing there for inspiration. You might wanna invest in a month of crunchyroll or hulu too to try out. I find those are two of the best places to watch anime personally, at least in the US Hulu has a good collection. Max has some great stuff too including the Ghibli movie collection which I highly recommend if you haven't tried any of those out. Amazon also has a good chunk of hard to find anime but its a pain unless you know the exact shows you're looking for. Heres some stuff off the top of my head worth checking out if you liked Edgerunner. Some movies and some shows (only sharing stuff I've seen):

    Classics:

    Akira (movie)
    Ghost in the Shell (movie)
Cowboy Bebop (One off season - 26 eps)
FLCL (Only 6 episodes @ 25 min each)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (One off season - 27 eps)
Code Geass (2 Seasons - 25 eps each)

    Newer stuff worth checking out:

Heavenly Delusion (1 13 ep season so far)
Psych-Pass S1 (haven't seen the other seasons so can't vouch for those but the 1st season is a complete 22 ep story arc)
Vinland Saga (2 24 ep seasons so far)
Mob Psycho 100 (37 total eps - show is complete)

I know I just said a page ago that I find it hard to recommend because it starts slow, but I'm gonna say Ergo Proxy. It more or less fits all the criteria you mentioned.

Extremely biased since it's probably my favorite anime, but I highly recommend Paranoia Agent if you can get it on any straming services you have available to you. It's short, has an overarching story that brings in a lot of unique/emotionally moving characters, and there's very little else out there that's quite like it.
