Yea the first weekend in May is when the summer blockbuster season starts. Kinda follows the college summer schedule. So Guardians 3 counts as the kickoff movie.

Kind of crazy how bad this is bombing. Wonder what it means for the future of the franchise, if anything

It’s similar to the Fast X situation - we’ll certainly get the next one but after that who knows

    Things have changed.

Can anyone tell me which of the movies I need to watch before this one? I've seen 1, 2 and 4.

I’d watch 6 just because it kicks so much ass

watch 5 and 6 first, partially because they’re incredible, but they also introduce new characters.

it is not necessary to prepare for this movie by watching the others, but they’re good, so

I just saw this, and found it to be crunchy, a bit chewy, but overall delicious with a pleasant aftertaste.

I do agree it's a shame Ilsa was killed off.

I also feel like Pom switched sides a bit too readily, but that's because her character had so little character development. I hope that changes in the next one.

Also, absolutely the dumbest car chase I've ever watched, and I mean that in a good way.

Having rewatched the whole series after seeing this one, I realized I hadn’t seen Rogue Nation since its release. So now I’m much more upset about the Ilsa death than I was at the time lol.

A character who is so cool, whose allegiances could be questioned, who looked like Rebecca Ferguson, who literally saved Ethan’s life and represented a chance for him to build a new one. Idk. Just so much more narrative meat on that bone than killing her off to bring in another actress who has to pretend she wants to fuck Tom Cruise. And I say that having a full blown Hayley Atwell obsession.

Definitely 5 and 6. But 3 wouldn't hurt either. It would provide clarity on Ethan's wife that is mentioned throughout 4 and appears in 6. And it introduces Benji.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rebecca's commitments to the new Apple TV series Silo was or may conflict with filming schedules and may have had a factor in Ilsa's fate. But who knows

Just saw it for a second time in a packed theater with my best friend from high school who was on vacation all last week. I still dunno if Ilsa's really dead. She already faked her death at the beginning of the film, and they somewhat allude to the possibility later in the film. We'll have to see when part 2 comes along.

It could go either way for me. The scene felt very final and very clear that she was dead. At the same time, what would be a great way for Ethan to get the upper hand on an enemy that can predict their every move? Try to get a card that's off the grid. I guess we'll see.

It’s not bombing. They lost every single large format theatre this week. If that didn’t happen it would be making more than what it is. It had a $20 million second weekend. Would have been more if it still had large format theaters. It’s at $370 million world wide. Prolly will end up reaching $500/600 million.

This one was one of the better movies I've watched this year. Hard to believe Tom Cruise is older now than John Voight was when Mission: Impossible was released.

In hindsight, it's pretty obvious they could've opened this much earlier in the summer... but it's hard to tell with proven IP such as Guardians, Fast, Mermaid (Disney live actions pull), Transformers, and Indiana Jones all crowding those two months when scheduling years in advance.

Like, part of the problem as I see it is some of these movies were already supposed to be out, which means we have too many trains finally leaving the station and not enough passengers coming on for the ride.

I think calling this “part one” might be deterring people as well. Maybe some people aren’t coming out to see “half of a movie”

hmm let me look up the box office numbers for deathly hallows part 1 and breaking dawn part 1

Hm. When was the last big movie that was actively marketed as “Part 1” upon release? Avengers and Spider-Verse both changed to give each part a different name, and Dune part 1 also was officially released just as “Dune.”

I dunno that I buy it being a big factor, but that is interesting to consider.

    MI was $56,200,000 domestic OW
    Fast X was $67,500,000

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 opens with $123 million at box office
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 opening with $125 million

Oh right, Fast X is a part 1 as well, lol. Think that was simply marketed as just “Fast X.”

Mockingjay Part 1 was nine years ago, and those other examples now just over a decade old. And, they were all very popular movie franchises based on very successful book series.

Yeah, there might be more, I don't know. But so many movies just do sequels. Not sure why MI didn't do the same. I do think adding "part 1" diminishes it a little.

I guess if the number-crunchers over at Disney’s Marvel Studios changed their mind on Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 fairly early (leading to normal people being surprised at the cliffhanger ending), there’s probably data somewhere to support that. And, that’s for a franchise that’s very ongoing-series-minded, lol.
