I'll wait till my kids old enough to want to watch it then I'll see it and probably be like "oh that was fine enough I guess"

I mean, I guess it’s silly to be mad at an adult for not personally caring about an animated film, lol. You do you. It’s just funny to single out the first LEGO Movie as terrible when, on a storytelling and craft level, I think it pretty clearly holds up as One Of The Good Ones.

Yea if you didn't like The Lego Movie I can see why Barbie looks painful since its certainly playing in that very difficult to pull off Lord & Miller zone of "here's this obvious terrible idea that we are going to have fun with and make special"

I have faith in Gerwig that Barbie is going to rule but yea it is sad that artists need to resort to shit like this to get a Hollywood budget on things.

Todd Phillips literally admitted to doing this with Joker (a movie i do not like from a fillmamker I also don't care for) but he was honest about what he was doing there - "what if I just ripped off Taxi Driver" is a very funny bit

I think the appeal of Barbie is pretty apparent, it's the first event blockbuster in forever plus it's unabashedly femme and fun

The IP mining began before the MCU but it is the realization of hypercapitalist ads served as cinema and the model these studios and companies are following, though the Lego Movie is better than most MCU movies and Barbie will probably be better than most of them too. I will always be disappointed in auteurs I like opting into the contentization of cinema, but I also realize how increasingly difficult it’s becoming for artists to work in cinema without having to adapt commercial/corporate IP

The current state of the movie industry is indeed fucked up. I work with independent films and the reality that theaters simply won't take indie films anymore without paying really just kills so much opportunity

Yeah I guess my point I'm trying to make isn't really about just watching it for a silly fun or whatever, but the phenomenon where film buffs and such are building it up to be some huge artistic achievement and one of the best of the year and etc etc, and the level it's gotten to like that

The marketing for the movie very much rests on people getting the joke that Gerwig is doing the movie. Even for people that don't know who she is, there is the stuff like the beach off scene or Ken asking to come over but not knowing why a man asks to come over. It's a toy for little girls but PG-13 so this isn't a Mario movie situation.

The reason a lot of apprehension is justified is because there is definitely a ceiling to how good this can be. Pretty much everyone agrees that Alfonso Cuaron made the best Harry Potter movie but does anyone think it is even one of his top three films? Depending on your stomach for mumblecore, Barbie is still going to be Gerwig"s "worst" movie in her brief directorial career.

it’s funny bc i agree that people that care about movies think that way but from the few potter freaks i know they universally hate the cuaron movie

Gerwig has a great track record so far. The movie looks self-aware and satirical. A lot of really great actors signed on. The trailers indicate a lot of visual style and aesthetic panache. It might not be for you, but if you don’t see what the appeal might be, you’re deliberately trying not to

I was watching some Weezer videos on YouTube yesterday and it is funny how few views the Pinkerton songs have when almost everyone I know who cares about music would rank that as the best album but something like Beverly Hills has ten times as many views. Definitely something of an echo chamber.

They’re doing it so fucking sneakily too. Not even giving a chance to get it in before it’s gone. I’ve been trying to work on the filmographies of some prominent black directors as a long-run project and an Antoine Fuqua was just vanished from Paramount+ with zero notice.

I didn't like the lego movie. I knew it was going to be a big ad and I found the satire style of naming a mcguffin a mcguffin lazy, stale and safe. The staleness could have been a result of IP leashing but I would have forgiven all of that if the jokes were fresh to me.

I think based on Greta's past work she can write a good movie with-in the same constraints. If she cant im done watching IP bait

It is so sad what IP control is doing to our culture, we are not allowed to tell stories about or with the things we grew up with, our culture. The only story spiderman can tell now is the one sony thinks will profit it the most.
