How to Blow Up a Pipeline - 7/10, Very effective thriller but the character work is very wanting, and I never quite felt the world-ending stakes the plot requires (despite some very, imo, pat attempts showing the direct consequences of CO2 emissions), but I can't deny it was pretty gripping to see the actual plot play out.

Very much recommend First Reformed as a companion piece, kinda resolves all my issues with this one.

  2. First Reformed is incredible, might rewatch this weekend with some friends that haven't seen it

  3. The Killing of a Sacred Deer - 7.5/10
    Rounders - 6.5/10
Beverly Hills Cop II - 8.5/10
    Beverly Hills Cop 3 - 7/10

  4. The new Little Mermaid is okay, got a few laughs out of the adults for sure, but this wasn't really for us. I'm so excited for all the little girls out there who'll be able to see themselves in this new Ariel

    First time watches

    Fast X - 4/10

    The Fan - 7/10

BlackBerry - 9/10 This skews much closer to Uncut Gems than a Social Network or Steve Jobs than expected and I'm thankful for it.

  7. (re: Little Mermaid) I don't get why it seems like it's cool to hate on Lin-Manuel Miranda now, it's like people did a complete 180 as soon as Hamilton dropped on Disney+ and became immediately accessible, and I feel it's rather unwarranted. Also, speaking of Renfield, I don't mind that Nora Lum pretty much plays the same character in everything because I loved The Farewell so goddamn much (her blaccent controversy on the other hand is something I'm in no position to have a say on). All that being said, the Awkwafina Scuttle rap was by far the worst thing in the movie, that shit was fucking awful. Lin making it real hard to defend him when he pulls that crap in an otherwise decent movie.

To be fair, Hamilton was awful long before it went from being only for rich people. It was so frustrating to watch what is such blatant propaganda being treated as subversive or critical in any way. The part at the end where they are all yelling about how great Hamilton supposedly was, was the worst form of idol worship since the scene in Dallas Buyers Club where everyone stops what they're doing and just claps for the main character.

I think he's a great songwriter and enjoy Hamilton mostly on the back of that and the performances but I get the general revulsion to it, and I'd seen general blowback well before it hit Disney plus in more leftist circles.

Dude himself is a massive dork and I can't get the lipbite image out of my head but other than that, don't really have the general animus others do for him.

That is kind to Beverly Hills Cop III. I just remember watching that ferris wheel sequence like "This is what it fell to?"

  11. Yeah, it's absurd but I'm a fan of the silly stuff and any movie set at an amusement park is gonna get points from me

    Glass is a good movie.

I mean Fury Road is better, but I still love Glass.

  20. Nightcrawler is very good and campy. Glass is also extremely underrated for a Shyamalan film, and I'm usually a skeptic. The small--scale is a feature, not a bug, and it features some of Shyamalan's best writing and directing to date. It looks great and it has actual heart. Reminds me in some ways of Lady in the Water.

Fury Road is obviously cool and good but I'm not as high on it as everyone else. On some level, it's a bunch of pro wrestler costumes talking in Dr. Suess rhymes with the action is played at 1.5x speed like a Three Stooges bit

I am one of the biggest advocates around but Glass is a tough watch.

  23. I think the writing of McAvoy's character is pretty egregious, but I enjoy seeing Willis and Jackson again (Jackson gives it his all), really like the institution setting, and the reveal at the end is one of his most tasteful and fitting. Feels like it's pulled directly from a comic book, in a really joyful way.
