I really enjoyed this. Halle was excellent and I felt they nailed the moments they needed to nail. A few minor gripes with the lighting and design of Atlantica, but overall had a good time.

 

i'm seeing people give this movie credit for simply not being at the bottom of the barrel

Lin-Manuel Miranda is always the root problem.

 

That scuttle song is legit the worst thing I have ever heard in my life. My wife just turned to me in the theater and went wtf was that...

Anyways... why *did* Prince Eric ask Ariel to grab his hand while on top of Ursala... only to immediately jump off of her and let go of each other? Why not just say JUMP?

Overall, still the best "live-action" remake of the Disney classics so far. Which really isn't saying much.

My favourite thing about the Disney live-action remake discourse is the whole "Nobody asked for this!" argument. Just cos' it's getting made, you're under no obligation to see it, and also by no means do these movies shatter the legacy of the originals. If anything it makes them more special.

That being said, this was fine.

 

why not make a different movie instead of pouring millions of dollars into a movie you already made to retain copyright

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd assume by demonstrating how special and precious animation is, and how lightning doesn't strike twice, etc., etc.

 

The originals are all beloved classics, you don't need shitty remakes to make people realize those movies were good

 

I know someone already dissed it, but the whole scuttlebug song thing is a stupid internet complaint at this point. It was fine within the context of the movie and the established characters (I mean it's a fucking annoying ass bird singing it). At least nobody in my theater had an adverse reaction to it when it occurred. Also, at its core, its a kids movie... adults without kids are only seeing it because of the nostalgia of the original. It was a fine song when taken within context and accepting the target audience. I can get how some people would find it annoying, but the whole bit of it being posted on social media without ANY context and people being like 'OMG!! IS THIS REALLL!?! TELL ME ITS NOT FUCKING REALL!?! OMGGG DYINNGG SO BADD' is just whack and dumb.

Movie was fine. On a good screen, it wasn't too dark as many complained it would be, the special effects were decent for the most part, the songs were sung well (accept for Eric's solo song, thought that was pretty bad) and overall it was a competently made entertaining movie that kept the spirit of the original with minimal changes (that I remember, haven't watched it in forever - my wife missed the French cooks song).

 

Yeah I kept waiting for the french cook song to happen... weird they left that out of this version.

Saw this today with my kids. Daughter’s been excited to see it for months now. She did enjoy it, but also…god they were both boooooored out of their minds like an hour and a half in. It’s definitely way too long for its target audience. There were kids getting up out of their seats in front of us and asking their parents the same thing, “when is this going to be over?”, and rolling around in their chairs waiting for it to end.

When you take an hour and twenty minute animated movie and add an extra 45 minutes onto it, well, you really better be hoping those extra scenes/songs are enough to keep those kids invested.
