Finally listened to the song and they haven't missed a beat at all. Actually sounds more like a continuation of their latest work than I expected, and a lot of that is due to the guitar work as described earlier in the thread. It really gives it that ethereal feel I loved so much about Lift A Sail, and S/T to a lesser extent. Can't wait to hear the rest of the EP.

Hey @williamryankey, I just wanna let you know how happy I am that you guys are back. I’ve been a fan since the underdog EP (can we get that on streaming lol) and you’re one of the best bands in the genre. So great having new music from you guys for pop punk summer! I saw some negative comments you responded to on the main page and I just wanted to let you know that the majority of us are really amped on the new music!! I really love how you guys actually pull back a bit in the chorus and let the vocal and guitar hooks pop through! They’re super catchy! Also that little “let’s go” amps me up so much… how is that not the extra lift that guy was looking for!? Anyway, great work and I’m super grateful for new music, especially because there was a time when it seemed like we’d never get it!

  3. Reuniting in 2022 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their iconic breakthrough album Ocean Avenue at Riot Fest in Chicago (six years since the band called it quits in 2016), Yellowcard felt a creative shift in that reunion and soon found themselves penning new material in Texas.

“When we got to Austin,” says Key, “we sat down and poured some whiskeys and we started talking about what we wanted to do and what we wanted out of it. We knew we were writing an EP which meant we only got five songs, so we had to really make them special. And I think there was an immediate sense of bringing it back to Paper Walls—the idea that we need to make something that we’re proud of, but also something that gets Yellowcard fans excited about what we’re doing. So at that point, we picked up the guitars and started demoing and, honestly, I think these five songs could have just been on that record in 2007. And I love that.”

The five songs that make up Childhood Eyes capture the spirit and essence of Paper Walls —its powerful yet tender anthems, its open-hearted emotional vulnerability, its sense of wide-eyed wonder against the odds—but they’re also riddled with the band’s experiences of the decade and a half since it came out. From the breakneck speed of “Three Minutes More” which features Pierce the Veil to the gorgeously plaintive final track “The Places We’ll Go” which features Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba (“When he comes in on that last chorus and you can really hear that Dashboard ripping grit in his voice, it’s just awesome,” says Key), the EP is a testament of a band re-finding its footing after a number of years apart.

    Press release.

will you be sharing your deeper thoughts on the ep now that it was streamed publicly? Maybe you already did and I missed it.

Agree that Portman is absolutely killing it on this song and every other one they played. He really brings a unique sound.

The boys were talking about songs where the verses are better than the chorus and while they said Ocean Avenue, I’d also like to submit Childhood Eyes cause damn the verses are so good.

Eh, only one of the most exciting comebacks in the scene and on this site in a long while. Maybe worth it, maybe not.

  8. I'm not a machine; I'm a person with real life responsibilities, commitments, and obligations that writes when I have the time and when I'm inspired. And I try to put a lot of time and energy into my words. There will probably be something in a newsletter, at the very least, since that's where the vast majority of my writing takes place these days.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

I never really connected with this band for some reason but this new song is great. really love that outro, might run back through their discography for stuff that sounds like that

That’s why I snagged the white one so fast before they were all up. I don’t have time for that nonsense.

"Hiding in the Light" is right up there with any chorus Ryan has ever written IMO. Soooooo good.

Agree with this. Initially thought it was due to poor sound quality at my end. Enjoying the song but I don't get the artistic decision by lightening the guitars for this type of chorus.
