Yeah, sitting with it for a bit I’m fully on team fake movie. As great of an ending as straight to black after getting his brain blown off is, I think the public reframing of the entire show as “Barry is the hero” is necessary. It just suffers from having to follow the most shocking moment of the entire series.

Barry walking through the toy aisle with assault weapons strapped all over his body was really something.

I hope Hader wins all of the awards for directing.

Crazy how few lines Barry got in the series finale of Barry.

Disappointed that there seemed to be only one actually funny moment - Barry walking out of the store strapped up

genuinely feel very bad for Gene getting blamed for Janice’s murder. He loved her so much :(

I thought this too - tbh going into this season, there was nothing more that I wanted from a finale than the exact inverse of this. But in a show where we see every character ultimately grappling with the core of who they are, it really makes sense given their final interaction. Hank couldn’t admit the part he had in Cristobal’s murder, much like Barry never wanted to for his. Whereas people like Fuches and Sally, who finally reckon with themselves (a man with no heart and a murder), set themselves free

But yeah I really wanted to see Fuches get just absolutely flattened

  8. This season was such a ride man. Show truly went out on top. Funny as hell and kept me hanging on every scene

I know Gene was constantly shown to be a self-absorbed shithead, but man that’s a rough ending for him, haha.

I "love" that he died in the most average person way possible. I feel like that would've 100% been my reaction in that situation.
I didn't get the meaning of the movie until I saw the kid's face at the end. Pretty magnificent.

And Hank? Just leaving it all on the field.

The way the sudden bursts of action this season were shot all made me laugh out loud. The grenade in this one in particular.

I just realized Sally didn’t want her kid to watch the movie because she knew it glorified Barry

Just a great night of television. Gene’s agent continued to steal scenes lol. Grabbing his suitcase killed me

man this was okay. Barry and Hank's ends were satisfying and Carrigan absolutely murdered that last scene but everything else felt kind of rote to me. still of the opinion that the time skip entirely fucked over Fuches, Jim and a bunch of other characters that coulda come back like Albert just to reduce the show to Barry, Sally and Hank and it's just the wildest choice to me. can't remember the last time I was still so invested in the acting and direction of a show where the writing baffled me this much

I did actually get to watch live last night but didn't get to post in here. That was about as perfect and straightforward as I think this show could have ended. Thoughts:

    - I actually think the movie was pretty much perfect for this show. At its core this show is a savage satire on Hollywood/the entertainment business and ending on a shitty movie getting the story all wrong and glorifying a monster is completely in line with the rest of the show
    - Barry's death scene was perfect; I absolutely loved the "oh wow". I can't even explain why but that was so good. To the very end Barry thought he was this invincible force that things always just kind of worked out for, and he had already justified that he was a good person because he was planning on turning himself in and thought Gene would appreciate it, so Gene just coming out and shooting him genuinely took him by surprise. In the end Gene had already lost everything so him getting to put in a bullet in the head of the man who was his downfall really worked for me
    - The way things ended up did genuinely make me feel bad for Gene, he was a selfish asshole but I'm not sure he deserved that. Just another casualty of getting sucked into Barry's life
    - RIP Hank :( I really thought he would be one of the few that was safe but his death scene was pretty perfect. Maybe a bit on the nose with him grabbing the Cristobal statue's hand but I didn't mind. That was absolutely incredible acting in the last scene between him and Fuches
    - For this entire show I wanted Fuches to die so badly lol but I actually really liked what they did with him, I genuinely didn't see it coming that after all of this he would still help out Barry and then disappear. I do think he genuinely loved him like a son in his own fucked up way
    - I don't think there's a school in the world that would hire Sally as a teacher after what is publicly known about her lol but I'm glad she had a relatively happy ending, at least somebody did. Not completely happy though, she'll have to live with the reality of this situation for the rest of her life, and I'm sure she's reminded of Barry every time she sees their son too
    - I thought it was kinda funny that they cast one of the kids from It as John but not the one that Bill actually played an adult version of lol
    - Again, I thought the ending with John watching the movie and coming to the conclusion that his father was some misunderstood hero is such a perfectly darkly funny way to go out. Even in death Barry still gets incredibly lucky with the incompetence of everybody around him

What a fucking incredible show. I still maintain the fact that 1-2 and 3-4 feel like completely different shows, and the transition is not very gradual and happens pretty suddenly; that's my one complaint about the entire show. It's a minor one though, and ultimately this has become probably one of my favorite shows of all time. I've loved Bill Hader for over a decade now but I never would have expected that he'd have this in him; he was already one of the best SNL cast members of all time but to see now that he's such an incredible filmmaker too is so exciting and I cannot fucking wait to see what he does next

This is a show about lying about who you are and trying to tell your version of the truth. Fuches and Sally found peace and honesty with who they are and therefore got to live. Hank and Barry stayed in denial and died. I guess Gene is somewhere in the middle being sent to prison for life

It's an interesting peek into Bill and the other writers' minds to see that they reserve the worst punishments for the people who chase Hollywood fame. Between Sally's meltdown last season and Gene this season, I'd rather be a murderer than an actor in this world.

Sally's end reminds me a lot of Bojack Horseman retiring to a wintery college to teach a drama class lmao. except in these two examples the one with the talking horse feels more believable in the world of its show somehow?

Man, I wish I liked the second half of this season as much as I loved the first 3. Nothing about any of it ended up landing for me, despite the actors all being on their game.
