I have vague memories of family watching the 94 World Cup. I’ve played football since I was a baby so I’ve always been into it. My dad and grandad are both United fans, but Beckham’s goal vs Wimbledon is what made me fall in love.

They might as well call the Europa League the "Sevilla League".

I was 10 years old and really bored one day during summer break and was flipping through literally every channel on tv looking for anything, stumbled on the Italy-Sweden Euro 04 game where Zlatan scored a crazy acrobatic back heel goal over Buffon and that moment had me won over pretty much instantly.

From that point forward it was a lot of playing Fifa, watching classic match replays and season recaps on fox soccer channel as well as deep wikipedia dives to learn my history. I already had an affinity towards United but there were two clear moments that cemented it for me. First was when Chelsea won the title at Old Trafford in 06, really cemented Chelsea as proper villains for me and solidified United as my team moving forward. Second moment would be the opening game of the 06/07 year, after the big Rooney-Ronaldo stuff that went down during the WC, the vibes around Old Trafford as they tore through Fulham really made me fall in love with the club.

  4. Such poor defending from Sevilla here

I was trying to describe myself to someone

I don't know about falling in love with the team or sport, but the turning point for me was seeing Newcastle destroy Wednesday at St James' park (8-0). I was 11 at the time and I think it took a few more years for me to really start to enjoy the game and start paying attention to the whole season, but that was the start. Up until that point, I'd been to a few friendlies (weirdly, saw them play at York and also saw Juventus go to St James') and I think maybe a league cup game versus Everton (bloody Duncan Ferguson), but they weren't properly competitive games and it showed.

Seeing them against Wednesday was different. I wasn't aware of it at the time, but both teams had had a terrible start to the season (think that's the year Wednesday fell out of the top flight) and Newcastle had recently hired Bobby Robson (it was actually his first home game). My step dad got a spare ticket from the guy who would normally sit next to him (they'd often swap season tickets if one of them couldn't make it), so I was in with all the season ticket holders this time, not the tourists (for want of a better word).

I can't remember anything about the game. Couldn't tell you the scorers (although, it turns out I witnessed Shearer score 5 times), but I just remember the atmosphere being insane as a combination of elation and shock mixed. I can distinctly remember the guy next to us repeated running down to the concourse to put bets on Newcastle scoring more and more. I suspect he didn't get anything out of his last one, as I think he went as high as 9.

Not only is this game 10 years old today but I recently found out Kane and Vardy were both on the bench for Leicester. Can you imagine how different things would have been for those two had this game not materialised the way it did?

Rashford out for the weekend. Another 1-0 defeat incoming and there goes United's chances of top 4. Lovely stuff.

  9. Can’t wait for the opposite to be reported tomorrow morning m

  10. Shit well now Alasdair Gold is saying the same thing. So it’s probably true.

Oh well. He’s not the only good candidate. But I really have no clue who we’ll end up with. My best guess would be Slot or Amiron.

  11. I think the price is 12m so I like it. As long as we make a bigger CB signing along with it.

  12. A lot of Tottenham news today! This isn’t surprising.

Never watch Leipzig, anyone know if this guy is good as cover for Saliba?

  17. Pretty sure he plays CB and RB. So I guess cover for White?

I really don't mean this as a "shit on Tottenham" post, but I'm surprised the Nagelsmann talks went on for as long as they did.

The guy had just left one of the big 5 jobs in world football, and was linked to possibly the biggest (Real Madrid). Literally could have his pick of any job going. The idea that he'd go to Spurs for a rebuild, very likely hamstrung by Levy, where quite a few other managers have failed recently (rightly or wrongly), and a squad not built for his brand of football, it always seemed like a weird fit.

  19. Yeah, I don’t disagree. It’d be a nice hire but I don’t think that not getting him means disaster. Plenty of good options.

Totally agree. I think it's far from disaster and there's, weirdly, better options available. Which is a strange thing to say about a world class manager.

I feel sorry for Sheffield Wednesday having to go through the play-offs despite their points total during the regular season. Losing 4-0 to Peterborough tonight will be a sucker punch for Darren Moore, hopefully he's not sacked as a consequence.

The first football matches I visited were around 1991 when I sporadically went to our local team with a friend. Euro 92 was also the first tournament I remember watching at least some games. The first Bundesliga season I followed was 92/93 and that has to be the time when I became a Bayern fan. I don't really remember what exactly drove me towards Bayern. But I still remember that we were on a school trip when the championship was decided on the last matchday, with Bremen becoming champions.
Then in the season 94/95 I started regularly going to matches of my local team. In 97/98 I also started going to away matches regularly and that has basically never changed until today with some small breaks here and there. During that whole time my local team went from being a 3rd tier team until 2000 to 7th tier today and fighting against relegation once again right now...

As for becoming an Everton fan, I always liked playing with them in FIFA for some reason starting in the early 00's. Then when I started following the PL around 10 years ago I was mostly watching hightlights without any real preference at the beginning (live streams were not really a thing back then unfortunately). After some time it was clear to me that I somehow always rooted for Everton and that was that. Completely unconscious decision.

Transfer fees are insane, but this guy is quality. He’s gonna go to a big club soon and absolutely dominate.

Whilst it would be devastating for my FPL, I desperately need Newcastle to lose today, and draw at most midweek. Top 4 race is getting way too close for comfort, and I'd prefer another team to be in the hot seat.
