The fact that people think Redfall's existence means anything beyond it being a bad game is pretty bizarre. I've seen some wild discourse around games these past few years, but man, Redfall not being a good video game has really ruffled some feathers hasn't it?

Well, it is a part of streak of rough products coming out of Bethesda. One of the things he basically says about that is that Microsoft might be too hands off with a lot of their developers now. Mesci and I have talked about this too before, just not in this thread lol

EDIT: There was more too, but if you’re curious I suggest you just listen. I don’t agree with all of it but it is pretty interesting.

I'll try giving it a listen here in a bit. As for Bethesda, outside of Redfall and Youngblood, Bethesda has had a decent last five years.

Ghostwire Tokyo was busted and in between that and Redfall was only one other game. Also before GT was Deathloop, which reviewed well but also had technical issues.

Oh, you're talking about the technical state of games. My bad. You're correct but that's Bethesda for you. Can't wait for Starfield to come out. It might not be Fallout 76 levels of technical bad but we all know there's gonna be a shit ton of bugs anyway. lol

I think we should differentiate there. Fallout, Skyrim etc. are broken because of what they are (or at least that is what they tell us) but games from other teams really don’t have that excuse. Also, the whole point was that Microsoft should get them to up their standards.

To be fair, I think the reaction to Redfall has kinda gone beyond expectations in regards to its technical state. Even with the context of previous Bethesda and even Arkane titles, it's been pretty wild to see the media and youtubers lose their minds over it. Some of it is also just uncalled for. For example, I like SkillUp normally but when he heavily implied in his review that Redfall was supposed to be Xbox's answer to Zelda and God of War, that lost me. I don't think anyone actually considered Redfall to be an answer to those games pre-launch, even if it ended up being good. God of War and Zelda are established IPs. I just don't see the value in making statements or implications of that nature. It's also borderline revisionist. The reaction to the disaster that was Fallout 76 was more funny than anything else. The reaction to Redfall is plain weird.

I do think Microsoft should be a bit more hands on but I don't necessarily think that in a general sense. It depends on the game or studio. Or both. Redfall certainly could have used it.

I'll say this: if you are squarely losing in every metric available and have 3 tentpole exclusives in a year with both Zelda and Spider-Man, not one of them can be RedFall.

At this point you're better off spending the money for a Game Pass sub on 4 games a year you'll actually want to play.

I agree that pundits take it too far always. Hence why I this podcasts is one of the last few pieces of video games media/punditry that I engage with.

That’s why I like that in the podcast they say that a mistake that Microsoft made is selling it like a tentpole game, rather than for example via the preview program like Grounded (which is a great game regardless). They should have known that it sucks and that that kind of marketing isn’t fitting.

I don't know about you but I pay my sub for the only game that matters. Tetris.

If it's one thing they've consistently sucked at is marketing. lol

They should have just killed it honestly, but last time they killed a shitty game that they had announced (Scalebound) people never stopped bitching either. Basically, stop announcing games until you know they are good and are coming out in six months. That should go for every publisher.

I just honestly can't believe they had that much terrible stuff around that game. Not only was the game bad but the whole like $200 dollar canvas bag debacle.

I'm glad they eventually fixed that, but it was pretty shitty of them in the beginning.

I mean didn’t Xbox acquire Bethesda pretty late in the development cycle for redfall? Sure they could’ve canned it or delayed it but their first order of business probably wasn’t “lose a bunch of money” and decided it’d be best to just get it out and move on
