I mean screenshots are damning, he promised both that the early bird was the lowest they would ever be and promised if you didn’t like the lineup he would refund your money. Those are both things that he said, people have those screenshots.

I know a hot topic of conversation in this thread has been "value." And this is another example of the lack of "value" in play here.

They included a free poster as a VIP perk. To me, this means it should be a relatively nice print with a design that's been well-thought out by the organizers months in advance... But they are fucking crowd-sourcing it. And paying them $250. Could be a cool opportunity for like, a student or somebody super new to the industry I guess. Still feels insulting to offer such a small cash prize, though, given the amount of time it will probably take.

And honestly, seeing that the festival is about a month out and they are only just now starting to think about this? If I were one of the people getting a poster I'd be bummed that there seems to have been zero thought put into it all.

I'm not sure what the usual rate is for an activity like that. But I would assume it's going to take 6+ hours to create a poster like that when you factor in the initial brainstorming, designing, layout, formatting, etc.

Which means the pay would be $40/hour... Assuming you win.

Again, good opportunity for somebody just doing it for fun. Or for a person looking to slot something onto a resume or whatever. But it just feels kind of insulting on multiple levels.

Kinda makes me want to develop a poster that's just poop emojis or something and submit it.

Or better yet, someone should put all this effort into a poster, make it look great and professional, but plague it with typos

Just put fake band names in. Or subtle jabs. Or put Ice Spice in there.

Holy shit! Hah! I didn't even think of that... That makes it even more embarrassing.

LMAO. Love the bold implication that the artist entering the contest has already purchased a ticket to the fest

I mean, he has been talking about appealing to high schoolers. $250 would've been a lot for me in high school. (And now, but you get the gist.)

This is like the kinda prize a high school would give out to whatever student designed the best semester newsletter cover.

the idea that a professional multi day music festival would post this on their socials a month prior to the show is laughable

I mean, yeah. $250 is a decent chunk of change. But this feels like the SXSW bullshit of "paying for exposure." I would feel SUPER differently if it was literally a contest for high school and college students.

The value of the end product is worth way more than the person who put the time, effort, and thought into creating it is going to receive. They are simply cheaping out and positioning it as a contest... Rather than paying somebody a fair rate to do it.

My bad, in case it wasn't clear, I am in complete agreement with how sad and pathetic this is and how $250 is bullshit, no matter the age. Just referencing the podcast where he said he was trying to appeal to high schoolers.

Sorry for not picking up on the joke! My bad. Hah.

I just find it infuriating that anybody is falling for this bullshit... I kinda hope somebody like the people behind HeCreative, Rockets Are Red, or Garage Land catches wind of this and gives them shit on their socials.

He can’t even do the damn contest correctly either. Merch contests are bullshit, because you’re making artists do free labor for no compensation (unless you are the ONE person who wins) and most of the time the organization gets to keep the artwork submitted and use it for whatever they want without paying a cent.

I bet you 100% in the fine print that they can use the submissions for whenever they want too.

Not sure if anyone posted about it yet, but they're also hosting a job fair this week to hire security, bartenders and box office employees. Wowzers.

I’ve heard a lot of people addressing this, like literally two common threads of the Woodstock 99 documentaries was they hired anyone, and once they got in they just took their shirt off and enjoyed the festival. But yet with the festival a month away they haven’t actually hired anyone to work it yet and by the time they do interviews it will be three weeks out.

Its just scary to me that instead of hiring an actual security company they're crowd sourcing the jobs. And with how close the festival is, there will probably be very little vetting done.

as an art director I HATE contests like this. as a kid I always thought it would be my "big break" if I won anything. as I've gotten older it's so obvious how predatory this stuff is. $250 is not enough to justify the time alone. then the people that actually give it a go are usually not all that qualified to make a poster anyway so the entries end up being not that great. idk though kids are hella talented these days, but they need to know their worth!
