Opinions can be wrong. All depends on the context.

also, where all these pandemic songs? I know of 4.

My qualm with pandemic lyrics is that, as a writer, it often times feel like low hanging fruit in terms of relating to an audience. I resonate a lot with lyrics, it’s the avenue in which I gravitate to songs the most, and I personally don’t enjoy when a lyric “feels” shallow. It’s just my interpretation of it, and I’ll admit that I’ve become fond of pandemic-centric lyricism after hearing an artist’s backstory regarding it, but I am very transparent in saying that they will always give me whiplash on a first listen. I haven’t really seen anyone do it eloquently yet; it always sticks out to me in a way that has to be appreciated after the fact, but it might be just my personal taste in poetry.

That being said, no writer owes me anything. They can write how they feel; I’m just a consumer.

This is what every person says who hates their life and has been destroyed on a forum before they disappear for awhile. You’ll be back and you’ll still be wrong. Bye.

I think love songs are just as low hanging fruit lyrically, if not lower. And I don’t think anyone has ever been like, “ugh, another song about love.” So this just seems super weird.

I was thinking the same thing actually when writing the post. I don’t know why I can tolerate one but not the other (more than tolerate, actually, i think nothing bad of love songs); maybe because one was ingrained while the other is a novel event? I havent really unpacked this yet but I want to say this is a great point and I am aware of the hypocrisy.

    Yeah.

Hearing a 27-year-old sing "nobody likes you when you're 23" ruins that album for me too. WOOF

I’m just not sure how something being easily relatable is a bad thing. Like, sure, how it’s done will have differences, but I guess I just don’t hold stuff like that against lyrics. I dunno.

I had to go back and read where this all started.

Like, if you don't like the record, then don't listen to it. and you are free to have an opinion, but this is not the place to start fucking drama. had enough of that from 2006-2009. I'm all set.

and we are all VERY AWARE about life outside of this site. If you want to talk politics and bullshit, there's a thread for that.

and I mean all of this in the nicest way possible.

I still need to sit down and have a really focused listen to this and pay attention to lyrics, but every time I've listened at work and stuff this is really blowing me away. It's just so much fun and pretty much scratches every itch I'm looking for Fall Out Boy to scratch. I like all of Fall Out Boy's albums, but I'll be surprised if this doesn't end up as my favorite since Folie.

  23. I'm firmly on the "this one line about one of the most globally traumatic and important events of our lifetime" doesn't impact that song much at all, but I'm even more fascinated by the idea that something built into storytelling that most of us have grown up with knowing, the world impacting art, the events of life being part of art, is somehow now seen as a ... bad thing? Like someone reading Emily Dickinson and being like "ugh, another bad poem about the civil war" or Picasso and ... ugh, I guess another civil war. I dunno. I've been drawn to music that reflects life as it's lived my entire life, and punk music specifically. Life impacting art and the poets (kids that didn't make it) authentic reflection of their lived experience ... yeah, can't get there on that ever being a bad thing.

Rather hear that than another song about how their ex sucks.

Delivery maybe? Probably just recency and confirmation bias holding hands on my part. I haven’t really seen it be spun in a way yet that I’ve been impressed by, like I would for other relatable things, but I can put fault in the fact that I’m probably not looking hard enough or unfairly judging it haha

That being said, I adore this album. Can’t get enough of it!
