I spent last weekend with my 2-year-old niece and it somehow made me both want and never want a child.

Yeah but we are talking about catastrophic effects on, for now, certain sections of the population, aka areas low lying next to water, already warm climates with poorer populations, etc. That is NOT worst case scenario yet, aka it can always get worse, aka it can start impacting more people and in worse ways. In can drive even more wildlife to extinction and maybe even us to extinction. We need people who are going to work to prevent these scenarios, in contrast to what those before us did (or, did not do) to prevent the already bad impacts. The evangelical right wingers that raise their kids to believe climate change is just an act of god are gonna still be pumping out kids and, thankfully, not all of them will grow up to believe it, but a lot of them will. Don't want to cede the population advantage to them.

Definitely sounds like a toddler. Simultaneously the most frustrating and most fun age.

imo having a kid and living for someone else like that is the greatest thing you can do as a human. so you have the support of one buttsfam.

I enjoy seeing my friends babies and toddlers. I get to see their greatness and I don’t have to worry about changing diapers or clean up their various messes. When my friends’ one year old throws up, I just laugh. Very good times.

Maybe we aren’t reading the same reports but I’m saying by the time our kids are able to vote in 18 years it will be too late to stop what’s coming 50 years from then—which will be large scale water and food scarcity and migration within areas of the US. Combine that with extreme levels of scarcity and agricultural change around the world and mass attempted migration of people to areas like the northern part of the US and you have a hell scape that you won’t be able to vote your way out of. This is even assuming the US doesn’t totally collapse by then into the growing fascist right wing party we have. I don’t think mass immigration is going to help with that! Anyway that’s how I read it so maybe you can see where I’m coming from. You aren’t necessarily wrong just a little too optimistic imo

I'm unfortunately unable to have kiddos now, but I love my friends kids. Best part about it, I don't have to take them home with me, lol.

I think we can say David is being too optimistic but I think we can also say you’re being too pessimistic.

Beyond that is just say I still question if David’s theory that left wingers having kids will really produce more left wingers to counteract right wingers having kids. No guarantee either side’s children are going to shair their views, I think there’s much more to it. I mean, does it mean anything that millennials who as a whole lean left are mostly the children of boomers who overall lean right?

My dad died when I was 12, so I don’t really know what I would have gotten from him. My mom was too busy dealing with my cancer ridden younger brother to ever talk about politics. She was Republican it turns out, but Trump was so awful, she switched parties and only votes blue.

Boomers shifted right as they got older, i.e. my mom, but as a kid my mom was much more liberal and dem supporting.

And I know we have a few polisci majors in here so they probably know, but as of right now when it comes to political socialization, parents are still the #1 influence on their kid's political beliefs. Social media and the internet has chipped away at it so it's not the runaway it once was, but it's still the best predictor

It is such an interesting concept to think about. I'm sure there's plenty of articles and studies out there for why this happened, but it's still weird to me that this is the generation that grew up on "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" and you see what they are now lol.

My parents have always been hardcore Democrats and my sister and I have helped them shift even more left. Dad is a Bernie guy and my mom loved Warren. I can't imagine the nightmare so many families have gone through recently losing people to far right bullshit.
