I know I don’t ever gotta hand it to him but thats a really funny tweet

 

He does have a unique ability to be completely petty and childish and also an utter shithead that is impossible to duplicate or imitate despite so many on the right trying so so hard to do so. They come off just shitty but not funny, and he is very funny.

I met him a few weeks ago. He gave a 25 minute speech on healthcare but then spent more time than that talking to people in the crowd. Really took his time with people and had conversations. Very disarming and charming. Also, surprisingly firm handshake. Surreal experience.

So what are the chances of a tik tok ban actually happening? are there enough dems also getting money from facebook and youtube to support it? and what does it say about the state of our country if one of the only things the parties can come together on is squashing free enterprise cause we don't like the fact that a non-american company built a popular social media site?

 

I mean, there are plenty of reasons for looking at TikTok skeptically. All said, I wouldn't install it on my phone.

It's not any worse than anything American companies do. It's just not Americans doing it and cuts into Daddy Zuck's bottom line, plus I guess going "China bad" plays well with the voters

As a Canadian watching this hearing, I could not help but raise an eyebrow. The U.S. has similar policies but dominates the tech industry. Is just about every other hardware and software product an American spy in the pockets of users worldwide? I take it this is not a moral objection but a political one. It is grossly oversimplifying the situation to claim that U.S. lawmakers are using their power to assist domestic businesses confronting a large and foreign competitor, but it is notable how much time is being spent confronting TikTok specifically instead of building a privacy framework that would limit its risk. After all, a good and worthwhile national privacy law would also kneecap many Silicon Valley giants. Again, this is only one component of a very complex picture, but it is worth mentioning.

 

But that's the point

If the people pushing for the ban actually cared about privacy, they would be pushing for sweeping laws that effect all social media platforms. But instead they are going after Tiktok seemingly because

a) American companies are in the politicians pockets and would profit from a ban

b) xenophobia plays well with the public

c) tiktok is mostly used by millennials and gen z. Don't wanna piss off all the boomers by suggesting changing facebook. Meanwhile you get rid of tiktok and you feed the generational culture wars
