for the most part football doesn't give a fuck about players.

Yeah honestly they probably need to give him an extensive ban but there's a lot of hypocrisy involved.

Is he accused of betting on his own results or just other results outside of his control?

I can see how the first is an Issue, but the second is more of a non-issue… but also probably against the rules for proprietary reasons related to betting against self.

    @fangclubb Prestigious

I believe he never bet on matches involving his own team or himself

Why is that against the rules then? I genuinely do not know anything about the issue (hate sports betting with a passion so have never cared to look into it), what is the problem with Ivan Toney placing bets on, say, La Liga results, Bundesliga or even the Championship games if he wants? He cannot influence anything outside of a Brentford FC game that he is picked to play in, so what is the actual offence he is pleading guilty to here?

  6. My only thinking is that it could just a version of “insider trading”. He may know information about certain teams/players that the general public doesn’t know.

There’s also just the slippery slope of allowing players to bet on the sport while the sport is simultaneously making tons of money from betting sites. You can’t give the bettors any kind of perception that the participants they’re betting on are also betting and potentially impacting the games. Toney’s case isn’t that, but letting things like what he did go unpunished could eventually snowball into that type of thing.

suppose it's easier to ban it all than selective banning?

  8. I think betting should be legal but I think it's a fairly reasonable and simple rule that players shouldn't be allowed to gamble on their sport.

Thank you. That inside trading thing reminds me of Kieran Trippier's ban for telling his friends that he was transferring to Atletico who then put bets on it - on the one hand I can see why that is a breach but on the other, who wouldn't tell their friends that they are moving to a huge club overseas?!

I could go on for ages about how ridiculous everything is but I won't lol, but I will say ban all betting companies from sponsoring teams asap. Whatever happened to teams being sponsored by a Scandinavian beer company, a local tool company or, for the teams with international reach, a respected Japanese technology firm? The "good old days"...

That scope of that rule is one of the few things the FA have got right with professional football in recent decades. People can come up with their exceptions ("Why does it matter if a Premier League player is betting on a fourth tier Albanian league match?") but there are perfectly good reasons to make that rule all-inclusive in order to nip it in the bud, even quite apart from moral implications.

That's not to say I don't have some sympathy for Toney, and professional football has a very 'having their cake and eating it' problem with betting companies.

    Completely agree.

  11. I do think there’s an argument about teams using the betting sites as sponsors. Banning them from being sponsors of specific clubs is the same line of thinking as not allowing players to bet on the sport. It’s very far-fetched, but who’s to say a club wouldn’t throw a game because they knew it’d increase the profits for whatever dumb betting sponsor they have and they get some sort of benefit from that? It’s the same logic.

Oof looks like we’re throwing out the FA Cup. It’s a shame but expected.

Had a day from hell at work, but hey, at least I can come home, have a drink and enjoy the footba... oh, nevermind, Arsenal are playing a Sean Dyche team.

No it’s not, but this is pretty much the first time ETH has rotated this much for a single game this season.

Michael Keane starting? I think I'm going to swerve this game!

Oh yeah, oh yeah, everything is terrible.

The CBs worry me, can't wait for better depth there eventually

Shocking dive by Paqueta. Of course the ref blows it up. Fucking hell. He had a great view of it too.

Can't gripe at that goal, it's some finish from Saka, yet I don't think we deserve to go in behind at HT.

  22. Why isn’t VAR used for all FA Cup games?

Lucky second goal, but the right call. No one wants goals disallowed when it’s that close.

Everton have been really good though
