I think this last little tail of the hurricane is supposed to go over central Florida all day so we still have some bad weather ahead, but it seems like the biggest threat has passed.

I'm moving to Sarasota (from MD) for a job in like two weeks. Any advice on things to do/avoid in the area, living in Florida, etc.??

Bug spray. Buy a ton. If you like dressing in layers, I hope you also like dealing with so much heat. We also only eat oranges and alligator meat so enjoy that.

Do not ever under any circumstances feed the seagulls. It'll be bad news for you and everyone around you, and all the Floridians will look at you like you're an idiot.

Also Sarasota is a pretty cool area, used to go to Longboat Key every summer.

Most well known attractions in Sarasota:
St. Armands Circle - really nice shopping/restaurant area.
John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art - The official state art museum of Florida. John Ringling the circus pioneer lived in Sarasota and had a huge european art collection which he donated to the state after his death.
Mote Marine Laboratory - pretty cool aquarium
Sarasota Gardens - Zoo/Botanical Garden, mostly has birds and reptiles. Is most known for their Flamingos
Sarasota Classic Car Museum - 2nd oldest continually operating antique car museum in the country.
Yoder's and Der Dutchmen - Really tasty Amish restaurants. Sarasota has the largest Amish population in the south.

There's alot of beaches in that area, but i'd say the best is Venice Beach a little south Sarasota. It's known to be one of the best beaches in the country to find shark teeth.

I mean if you're going to Sarasota you have to go to Munchies 420

Oh yeah! I've heard great things about that place. I was going to include it in my post but totally blanked on the name.

Just got to MI to celebrate my grandma's 100th birthday. Part of me is glad with a Category 5 churning out there, but the other part of me wishes I was around in case it winds up going further west.

So that wild Chuck E. Cheese brawl that's going viral now is the local one I take my nephews to. I can't say I'm too surprised, honestly.

    Bringin the ruckus

Hope everyone's keeping an eye on Matthew and it ends up not bothering us too much. Just drove 4 hours home in the torrential downpour from Miami to Tampa like an idiot because I didn't check the weather before I got in the car. Driving on 75 through torn up roads under construction filled with standing water, cars either going way too fast or toddling along with their hazards on while trying to avoid semi-trucks wasn't the most fun way to spend a Monday evening.

When I saw it was the one in Kendall I watched it hoping none of my relatives were in it. I'm more surprised this didn't happen at Dandy Bear.

How are everyone's preparations going? I ended my vacation in Palm Beach 4 nights early and got back to Orlando today. Going to head out to see if there's any water and non perishables left, just in case. I feel paranoid but the gas stations and stores here have been insane. I hope everyone stays safe!

I've got some food and stuff haha. I'm just gonna head to Tallahassee more than likely.

I got gas on Monday because I was running out anyway so I saved myself from that mission. I went to Walgreens to buy some things because Publix and every other supermarket here is a madhouse.

Yeah I forgot to get gas haha. Which doesn't matter too much cause my car is shit and I won't be driving it.

Hurricane shutters have been put on, gas filled up (2.64/gal which led me to $25 worth of gas), and classes got cancelled early and everyone at work left an hour early.

The Sarasota area's been downgraded to a Tropical Storm Watch so I think things will be mostly OK here. I do need to get gas tomorrow morning, though. Forgot to do that.
