Yeah, cool. I HOPED that might happen, I saw that as reflective of Cameron's "make a movie for the majority" instincts. It's why the Avatar soundtrack (which I love) plays it safe without being alien-sounding at all

End of the day, what's recognizable to most people watching a movie is what will stick

Never underestimate a post-Christmas day push at the box office.

Only worth it for IMAX 3D....doubt I would like this or been able to sit through it at home even on my OLED.

So the original is my wife's favorite movie (she likes the nature, animal, and the whole pandora world aspect) and I always thought the original was fine. A cool new world that Cameron built. Epic feeling. Somewhat familiar yet unique. Overall good time.

Expectations may have been too high though for this one.

I liked the first half. Establishing the water world aspect, showcasing the new family members, and shoehorning as many old characters as possible, and of course just watching this really beautiful new landscape was great.... but the 2nd half felt really clunky. The drama was getting repetitve and I thought bringing back the same bad guy was a mistake. Like the ending sequence being "are they going to drown in the sinking boat" wasn't what I would have gone with. I think we had the bad guy have a knife/gun to someones head moment a million times too.

In the end the biggest issue is that we know there's a plan for like a million more movies so I was hoping this movie was going to give us an explanation, a reason of why. Expanding the "avatar universe" and establishing the stakes. We talk about the Earth dying and that the whale blood keeps people from aging....i think we should have focused more on that, instead of dragging out the "building of skills" montage that we got. 3 hours to establish "sullys stick together" felt like a waste. I'm not hooked for more avatars (and i was loosely hooked to begin with)

    Overall a B grade... 7.5/10 type deal

Been thinking about how this is one of the truly best blockbusters of the last decade. Along with Mad Max Fury Road, Spider-Verse, The Last Jedi, Top Gun, Mission Impossible Fallout, etc

  10. If you watched any of those on a plane you'd still get so much out of them, whereas this is only a good 3D, if not IMAX 3D theatrical experience

I actually liked Avatar 1 better at home and not in 3D.

3D really is a gimmick, and I think the problem has always been not one of technology not being there and more of it just not being very compatible with narrative films the way we think of them and watch them.

3D would work better for like a theme park type ride where you're flying a plane or doing a first person shooter as opposed to a 3-hour conventional narrative film. Or some type of gimmick thing where the movie switches into 3D whenever people link up with the Avatars and then that sequence switches into a character's POV or something like that. The entire language of film has evolved over time not in 3D but with all sorts of other techniques meant to draw you in in various ways.

With all of the latest tech it really just strikes me as the best possible version of a terrible idea.

The story is good here. This has one of the best action movie climaxes ever put to screen. It would work on a plane still. It's so much more than just "good 3D"

It isn't healthy for the industry as a whole to only have one movie that takes it all during the Christmas season, but at least this year the movie that is cleaning up at the box office is actually, ya know, good

  15. Round two today. First hour def feels a little standard, and unfortunately, I did notice the HFR a good bit more than I did the first time around. Still... I don't think I've ever wanted to live in a movie more than I want to live in the second hour of this. And the final act just whips so much ass. The dialogue is what it is, but the story works, and it's about ten times as emotionally complex and satisfying as the first film. The performances are also great and I really have to disagree with whoever said Sigourney sounded old; I think she's one of the highlights here.

And honestly, as funny as it's been to read about "white Mowgli," and as strange as it is seeing a character consistently interacting with the Na'vi world, I really like his character the setup for his arc. Excited to see where it goes next.

    "I'll chew on a dog!"

From the first rain scene on, this movie takes you for a ride in a way only James Cameron can.

hoping the success of the franchise means we get an expansion to the Animal Kingdom land, or at least an update to Flight of Passage to include elements of Water

it is funny that we've seen the tulkun at the end of the ride for years and now are finally introduced to them in the films

in my headcanon, we see Payakan jumping out of the water at the end of FoP. I will cheer for him the next time I ride it

I hope they make a ride equally awesome that explores the underwater. FoP is the best ride I’ve ever been on, don’t want anything changing, just them to make another that is just as good.
