To no one’s surprise, Messi’s Insta post is now the most liked post in the history of the platform

Never, but I do fond the European reaction to American’s saying soccer genuinely weird. Who cares what someone else calls it. We call it football, tbey call it so

I was trying to describe myself to someone

Probably something to do with Americans speaking English and having a game they call football, which they primarily play with their hands...

Although I think that might be true of the Australians as well, so who knows.

Not really arguing anything, just went down the Wikipedia rabbit hole on the topic:

"The word "soccer" originated as an Oxford "-er" slang abbreviation of "association", and is credited to late nineteenth century English footballer, Charles Wreford-Brown.[8] It has been speculated that both this story and the William Webb Ellis rugby story are apocryphal, however this appears to be a revision of history as the English term 'soccer' fell out of favor while England differentiated their language from America's (where the term soccer had become widely used) English in the 20th century due to growing American popularity.[9] The New York Times, published in 1905: “It was a fad at Oxford and Cambridge to use “er” at the end of many words, such as foot-er, sport-er, and as Association did not take an “er” easily, it was, and is, sometimes spoken of as Soccer.”[10] There is also the sometimes-heard variation, "soccer football"."

Also learned association football and American football both originated roughly in the same decade.

This topic comes up like once every ten days it feels like. Who gives a shit what anyone calls anything words are all just noises we assign meaning to. It does not matter at all.

It feels like a zeitgeist argument people think they have to make or like it’s the default conversation you have to have with people who don’t actually pay attention to or care about the sport. It’s the most scripted/NPC level convo you could have at this point. I’d rather spend thirty straight minutes small talking about the weather.

It’s also a form of gatekeeping from European fans to newer American fans I think. Which I understand the reasons why but I just cannot work up the energy to care.

I have rarely seen a team becoming World Champions and their fans still putting out racist remarks towards opposing players. Must be the South American "banter" I am not familiar with...
