Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realise I don’t think there’s a good replacement for Gareth.

International management isn’t what it once was, and most top managers don’t want to do it because you don’t get much time with the players, plus results feel too randomised and isolated due to the cup nature of tournaments. That’s before you think about how the money isn’t as good, and so we’re one of about 7 nations (Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain) who can afford a half decent manager, and even then…

I mean, I see Poch said he’d like to manage us, but I honestly don’t think that would be a good move for either party.

Potter wouldn’t take it now. Dyche is too brexity for these young players. Howe wouldn’t take it. Who is left?

  4. I think the roster is perfect for Poch’s 4231 system that was successful at Spurs.

The Southgate out shit this morning and past few weeks is cringe imo. Some England fans have very short memories. We went out to the WC holders and arguably were the more deserving side to win. You've got big teams like Germany, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, getting knocked out by lesser teams.

France went into last night's match the more likely winners, betting-wise. You can't win them all, but seemingly England fans think you should.

Kind of hope Southgate does go and we get someone shit who mismanages the squad, and people get what they deserve.

To add to this, we have Eze (24), Smith Rowe (22), Harvey Elliot (19), Jacob Ramsey (21), Patino (18), Ben White (25), Skipp (22), Balogun (21).

Yes it was a missed opportunity, but these guys will have many more chances.

It is crazy thinking about the amount of talent on englands squad and then coming up short and then me think the Us squad should be winning anything.
England would’ve won if Rashford took that second penalty.

Anyone else should have taken that second penalty. You’re just being too cute at that point. Gotta thinking worse case scenario and assume you’re going to pens after ET. Has anyone ever converted 3 pens in a single match at a tournament ?

Nah, I fully support Kane taking the second penalty. Being too cute would be second guessing and changing your usual taker.

Kane is our best penalty taker. Your want your best in those situations. It didn't work out, but it was the correct decision.

I mean I’m a city supporter so a penalty is less than 50% chance going in.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

Not too sad about England being out. We had to face arguably the toughest team and we did decently. You can't win every game and look at the mess some of the other favourites got themselves into.

Decent tournament overall. Southgate has built a team and spirit which works. I can understand some of the criticisms, but I also remember England taking great teams to tournaments and being absolute dog eggs.

The biggest shame for me is that I think this squad needs to show themselves they can be winners and given how the quarters went, this might have been the best time.

With a bit of luck we'll be in good shape when the Euros roll around, but it's nice not to dread England tournament football anymore.

England, the US, and Spain have so many talents that will be in their prime come 2026 that it makes it pretty easy to be excited for the future despite all coming up a bit short this tournament if you support those teams. They’re each just a few pieces away.

Goncalo Ramos appears to have had a fairly… intimate… video of him leaked. Shame that this happens as he has a big, very notable, break.

I still can’t believe in 2022 we have a clip where Piers Morgan and Cristiano Ronaldo are sharing a laugh thinking about the fact that Ronaldo probably has just as much money in the bank as he does instagram followers. True darkest timeline kind of shit.

I think the constant criticism has gotten to Southgate mentally and he may just say 'sod it, I'm done'. I don't think he's gotten enough credit for how he's evolved, and people are too fickle and don't look at the big picture. The game against France was miles apart from prior losing efforts (including against Italy). He took gambles with selecting certain players that were unpopular or out of playing time (Maguire/Walker/Pickford), and they all worked out, and he maintained the same formation and attacking intent from Senegal. They just lost a tough game, one in which relatively little was his fault except for maybe not changing things quick enough (but they were playing well enough that it wasn't necessarily needed). The nations league was a disaster, and I can't excuse that really, but the way they played in the world cup was great (except for the US game). I think in that game I will say Southgate set us up cowardly as he was probably thinking, 'I'll never hear the end of this if we lose to the bloody yanks' as it was out of sync with the other 4 games so there had to be a conscious, we'll take a point, effort there.

I mean against Italy, Shaw scored early and the Italians were all over England and should have won in regulation or over time. 2-1 in a game we could have won against the world champs, is a big improvement, despite it not seeming like one with it being a finals loss vs a quarter finals loss.

I also think the ref was terrible and despite Fox's shitty coverage and lack of replay, I'm still convinced Saka was fouled on the counter attack leading to France's first goal, which should be in VAR's jurisdiction to overturn. The first no penalty call on Kane is baffling too, but I've been led to belief it was outside the box, and VAR can't award a free kick only a penalty (so correct incorrect call?).

As far as the next manager if Southgate does go, I have no idea.

I personally applaud him for the mental image!

The foul (if it was a foul) was too far away from the goal for VAR to intervene. The ball was passed like 20 times between the two situations.

Actually, if VAR would have called the ref to the monitor, then he could have awarded a free kick after checking and deeming the foul to be outside. But if the VAR already thinks it was outside then theres no need to call the ref. One of the many inconsistencies that VAR introduces.
