To be fair, this first season is significantly less white than GoT (at least early on, idk how it will pan out) and I’d argue gayer if you count the undertones from the first couple of episodes lol

bleh this is definitely enough for me to not want to get into it

The tell-tale sign is that the recommendation comes from my unvaxxed idiot Libertarian brother-in-law who thinks Breaking Bad is boring, so I should have known better

Yeah the fact that all of the republican people that come into our PT clinical talk about is enough for me to say no thanks lol

Yeah the Republican/Libertarian demographic is for sure one this show will appeal to, but I'm very liberal and also really enjoy this show, but I'm sure I'm in the minority there. For me the appeal often comes from the ranching elements that the show presents, and the cinematography of Montana that we see almost every episode (I've traveled throughout western Montana and love it), all of which keeps me coming back to this show every season, despite its Republican-leanings and overdramatic dialogue.

I've decided I'm going to watch JCVD's "Kickboxer* tonight after work (haven't seen it before), and I'm super stoked

  8. I feel that way about most HBO, past and present. It's why stuff like Sopranos and The Wire are perpetually on the backburner while I prioritize dumb shit like DC/CW that had a lot of queer/poc rep

Yeah Yellowstone isn’t good but it’s entertaining. I can’t say I’d recommend it to anyone but I’ll keep watching. I am also a technically a cowboy so.

I am definitely not watching the spin-off shows though. I ain’t keeping up with all that.

I actually found 1883 to be a step up in quality from Yellowstone; we'll see how 1923 turns out though

  12. Yeah I figured, it's just that my problem is more so with HBO in general and those two shows are often considered the absolute best of television

I've tried watching Yellowstone twice. Got 3 eps in the first time and barely got through the pilot the second time I tried. Just not for me. I have heard 1883 was good from people who didn't like Yellowstone though, so I may try that at some point.

The Wire has pretty good queer representation too. David Simon was one of the first people in TV i've seen to write openly queer characters whose storylines and arc don't singularly revolve around their queerness.

Omar is considered one of the greatest television characters of the last 25 years and him being an openly gay man just becomes such an afterthought that i think some people forget he was gay.

Generalizing shows and their audiences based on assumptions about who likes them is whack imo

  22. Your face is... whack...? Nope. Nevermind.

  23. The Wire sounds more interesting now. I can't say I'll get to it anytime soon, but it's sure moved up the list

Also (here I go)...... The Sopranos focuses primarily on the crimes of white men but its very much a micro-examination of that, the toxic state of America, and the role of the patriarchal family in the new millennium. Its sympathies are absolutely with the women, children, and POC; mental illness is extensively explored as a theme, everything from addiction to depression and anxiety to dementia; goes into race relations, sexuality, male ego/fragility and the American obsessions with consumption, greed, materialism, misogyny. I think it's unfortunately pretty common to believe it's this macho mob show if you haven't seen it but it's literally the opposite. It's about the myth of masculinity and the moral fight for salvation.

All true, but that does require a certain amount of…thought to interpret and understand. I once worked with a 19 year old who said his favorite show was The Sopranos and once he started talking about it, I could tell he missed the nuance and just saw the surface level. He was also a big Rogan head too
