on the subject of whenever people started their collections, i'd love to hear what the first record everyone bought was and when. mine was Paper Route 's Absence back in 2013 (which is also my favorite album of all time). bought it at their show and got the band to sign it.

My first one was AFI’s Crash Love, but I briefly got out of the vinyl game for a few years… so that one is sadly in someone else’s collection.

I like hearing about others' system setups and listening habits. I find I listen way less now after having kids and moving to a house where my setup is in the basement. But I also listen much more often in the winter when I'm inside more so looking forward to that picking up soon. I have an old Onkyo receiver and Hitachi turntable from my father in law. Nothing flashy but they still sound/work great and there is something so satisfying about smelling the old electronics as they warm up.

Something really cool I heard on a podcast with Jason Zeimet (from Unoriginal Vinyl) is that he keeps a library checkout card with every record and records the date whenever he listens to an album. He also writes down his thoughts on why the album is special to him. Then whenever his kids/whoever gets his collection someday they can see why the album was important. I started doing that too and it feels like writing a journal for my kids to discover someday.

First album: Copeland's Beneath Medicine Tree, coke bottle green. Picked it up at a show in 2010

Either The Starting Line "The Early Years" or The Swellers "Good for Me" in 2012. Can't remember which one was first.

Then I bought Motion City Soundtrack's "Commit This To Memory" and The Academy's Is... "Almost Here" on the 10-year tours to use as artwork to hang up in my room lol. Didn't start collecting until 2016/2017.

The Dear Hunter's "Act II" back in May 2015, but didn't have a player at the time so only really started collecting in Spring 2021. First one at that time was Julien Baker's "Sprained Ankle".

  13. The Ataris - Blue Skies, Broken Hearts...Next 12 Exits. Bought it at their Warped Tour tent in 2001, and they all signed it. I didn't get a record player until like 10 years after that, haha.

My first two records purchased with my player at the store were The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. The first record I bought online after that was Moving Mountains' Pneuma on gorgeous green vinyl.

i’ve bought vinyl singles/ep’s before for download cards and such. my best friend and i went to see the 20th anniversary show for the san francisco symphony and metallica in cali, and we made a pact to get the best bundle available when it became available for purchase, and it came with vinyls.

i never chose to get into collecting, it chose me. i had bought a nice victrola record player for my girlfriend on a black friday several years ago, but she broke up with me before i could give it to her. i did end up giving her a copy of ‘the eraser’ from thom yorke that blew her mind and crushed her at the same time, but held on to the player. it was about 4 months before i chose to keep it.

i came in at a great time: walmart has re-released metallica’s discography on colored vinyls, thrice had repressed almost their entire catalog, and there’s something quaint about listening to actual records that’s soothing to me. i play a record almost every day now. and though it’m being bery choosey on what i get, i like my colection so far.

  20. Absence is one of the few albums on my Discogs wish list at the moment. Would love to own that one on vinyl!

  21. Checked out a record store on my honeymoon in 2017 and bought my first two records (Bleed American and Is This It). Then I had like 15 by the time I bought my turntable a couple months later.

I just grabbed Paramore's Brand New Eyes on Amazon for under $22. Haven't seen it under $30 in awhile, so it was a nice treat!

same here, but for The Peace of Wild Things. i had a choice between one or the other at that show, and went with my favorite of the 2. now TPOWT is out of print and i regret not picking it up at some point afterwards.
