Smile was fine. Not good, not bad. Could’ve cut the cheap jump scares in half and still had too many lol. It really wants to be It Follows, but lacks the style and knack for tension - probably should’ve just had more fun with the concept. The self seriousness makes it hard to forgive the undercooked parts. Also doesn’t help that most of the interactions with the Smile are spoiled in the trailer

The Smile crawling into Rose’s mouth at the end was a cool image

  3. Starting the month off strong with You're Next. Really neat take on the home invasion subgenre. The shaky cam was a bit dizzying but damn the sound design is fucking nuts. I love the twist and the kills are so satisfying.
I love Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark but I didn't expect it to actually be so scary! I guess it's a testament to how genuinely unsettling those books were for kids. Definitely due for a rewatch.

Haha that racist slur came from a guy who is credited as "Racist" and the tampons in the ears was from a character named "MILF". One of the funniest IMDB pages: The Final Destination (2009) - IMDb

Absolute trash movie and certainly the low point of the franchise.

This has stuck with me a fair bit since I watched it in cinemas. It was quite unlike anything I had seen before and Howard Shore's score has been my work soundtrack for weeks. Definitely plan on watching more Cronenberg during spooky season.

Which Funny Games are you guys referring to? The 1997 or 2007 one? Might check it out tonight as both are on MUBI UK.

Kicked off my October watching The Lost Boys last night. Why can't vampire movies still be that effortlessly cool?

Haneke directed both and the American remake is like, shot for shot, the same film. I’d encourage the original, as I think it shows more of Haneke’s initial vision. You can’t really go wrong either way because whether it be Austrian or American, you will probably find it uncomfortable

Also watched The Munsters last night. It was barely even a movie so I don't have much comment. I've made my Zombie opinions clear and this one surely didn't help.

  15. It's definitely barely a movie, but I think knowing that going in, at least in my case, actually helped lol. I pretty much liked everything I shouldn't have. The cheapness worked for me, as did many of the jokes not landing. For better or for worse, it felt like a love letter to the source material (and very in the spirit of the season)

Okay so Miike is relentlessly twisted haha. This was real good though. Afraid to watch the remake.

Edit: After reading the imdb trivia on the remake, I’m not gonna be able to resist!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) has been on my list for probably four years now. Weirdly enough, I kept putting it off because I knew I was going to love it and I guess I kind of wanted to keep it in my back pocket as a safe option. I FINALLY watched it tonight and it did not disappoint. The camera work was so good and the characters were great. I also appreciated how the story was told - the characters caught on to what was happening very quickly, so we were right there with them the entire time watching to play out. One scene in particular may be a new top moment in horror for me, while another was just weird and hilarious.

I just watched the original hellraiser for the first time and not sure how I feel. It wasn’t what I expected.
