we have boys volleyball in our district now in the spring and I’m so bummed we never had it when I was in school. My family used to play volleyball every Sunday during the summers and I got pretty good at it haha

Defending sports culture is not something I had on my David bingo card. I remember being at a bar during that World Series and someone got a beer poured on them and punched in the back of the head just because they had a Tampa Bay Rays shirt on.

That’s rich when the laws have prevented local land use from blocking oil and gas development and pipeline companies can literally take people’s land to build their infrastructure

On another point, I’m not fond of the concept “toxic masculinity.” It’s pathologizing and essentializes gender enforcing the binary.

I think hegemonic masculinity, which describes the harm of patriarchy as an in group (male, cis, straight, white) against an out group (women, lgbt, poc, etc.)

Yeah but I’ve seen the same exact scenario happen at bars and parties a few times over dumber shit than sports tbh. It seems like we’re talking about the bad sides of humanity and saying “sports doesn’t erase those bad sides so therefore sports culture is bad” and I don’t really think that’s a good way to think about it.

I guess personal context here is I played two team sports for 10 and 13 years respectively, and currently spend time around a lot of high school athletes as part of my job, so i probably see the more chill and good side of sports more often than most people who are just experiencing it via pro sports watchers haha. Like I am keenly aware of the fact that a large portion, probably the outright majority, of Philly sports fans are probably south/northeast Philly right wing “WWC” Neanderthals that cheer Let’s Go Brandon and thus are probably the types that are at home calling their sons Nancy for not playing football or whatever. But that’s not what I’ve experienced as being what sports is “about”, imo.

Some of this footage was already pretty clear imo but a few of these I’ve only seen mostly in footage that had that more early 2000s look to it. And the audio is def cleaned up on a lot of these clips. Warning: towards the end of the video is the clip of the guy who was inside the second tower and on the phone with 911 when the tower collapsed. Still to this day one of the harder things to listen to.

Sweden's election is today and according to polling it looks like the far-right party is going to make significant gains from the 2018 election.

Interesting thread about how their voting works

Can I have that many options that are seemingly left of center? Lol

I’m gonna guess the right wing party there is the Sweden Democrats?

Correct. I haven't looked too closely at each party, but the left of center parties are Social Democrats, Left (this is the socialism party), and Greens. I think all the others are center or center-right, and then the Sweden Democrats are the far right. But I also don't know how being a "center" party would compare to here.

Not to keep the sports discussion going but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say people's perceptions are probably colored by their experience.

Despite not being a sports fan, I actually took part in a fantasy football league for a few years on a forum I used to post on and it was a fairly positive experience. Probably because we all knew each other from the forum in general, so it wasn't like we were strangers.

I also knew someone at a job I used to work who did the whole "take the day off when my team loses a big game" kind of thing, and while I admit I thought it was weird, it's frankly no weirder than someone being upset when a band breaks up or someone being upset when a game company closes up shop. It's about something you're invested in and you react to it. I'd be a hypocrite if I looked down on someone for that.

I dunno, I think the things people are concerned about are less "sports culture" things and more human things. It's kind of reductive to look at it through the lens of "this is how sports fans are" and not "this is how human beings are". I mean, anything and everything that invites gathering and camaraderie can just as easily invite gang mentality and toxic behavior. Like the hardcore music scene. Or multiplayer gaming. Or just about anything.

Anyway, going back to my first statement, I think if you've never yourself been involved with this stuff, it's a lot easier to focus on the negatives, because you've never seen the positives, and certainly the negatives tend to stand out more. I think that's true of anything too.

It’s become one of those terms to deflect blame, as we’ve seen in this very thread, instead of taking a critical look at an institution people can hand wave the problem away by saying it’s just toxic masculinity what can ya do

This is why it’s best to be a fan of perennially mediocre or bad teams. The culture is built on low expectations so it’s extra fun to share in the wins but there’s not as much toxicity during the losses. Anyway go Buffs.

i don’t think anyone is saying “what can you do it’s just toxic masculinity”, rather it’s “the root of the problem is toxic masculinity, not ______” which in this case is sports and sports culture. Like, taking away sports wouldn’t eliminate those problems, it would just shift them into whatever “thing” those folks latched onto next.
