It probably has to be done by Congress, but I honestly don't know. I know that was one concern that came up, and might again, with loan forgiveness is whether that has a tax consequence. But since it's an executive action he could potentially also couple it with commanding the IRS to waive that tax consequence.

After this I'm convinced we're not getting any additional loan forgiveness, unless there's some miracle in November. But I would like to at least see Congress put forward some student loan reforms that at least:
    • Significantly lower, if not eliminate, the interest rate
    • If interest remains, remove the cap on the student loan interest tax deduction
    • Eliminate any adverse tax consequences for forgiven or discharged student loan debt
    • Allow student loan debt to be discharged in bankruptcy

Fully agree with this but that miracle really needs to happen or we are not seeing any of that actually getting passed.

Slightly frustrated that this was not all rolled out together. Feel like he could announce this plan today and then couple that with saying what that he can't fix these things alone and need something passed by Congress to address them.

  7. I think the reaction to this could impact how future candidates run. If it's seen as a political win, the next candidates will all be fighting over how much more they can forgive.

Definitely not! My man John Agnello is out here in his 60s engineering, mixing, and producing some dope ass bands.

I just don't have the money to go to school for any of it. and No one is going to give my broke ass a loan for anything.

But like, if the opportunity were to just fall into my lap, that would be rad as hell!

I certainly hope you're right, but what always seems to happen is that something is done and then the problem is forgotten about though it certainly still exists.

I'm guessing (hoping?) that's going to come with the full statement / speech later. Some (unfounded or at least unsupported) claim that he doesn't have the ability to do more and needs Congress to act with a list of things they need to do.

Yeah I am hoping that this is the case. I would really like to see them layout why they can't do some of this stuff but that is just getting in the weeds for a lot of people but I am a nerd and want to understand what some of their legal basis is. I know I won't get any of that though.

Would be wild to me to have the expectation that you had to do your entire college career receiving Pell Grants...the effort it would take to create some sort of barriers to do that seems nuts in my head. Though I have seen dumber stuff happen with the Federal Government.

Honestly after this I may have the means, albeit not without a fairly big sacrifice, to just pay off the rest of mine. I will need to talk with my financial advisor though to figure out if it's worth it: instead of just throwing money at interest and getting nowhere, to just take that money and invest it each month.

I think there are plenty of online programs for learning, or just find some Berklee music nerd to teach you.

Pell grants because that targets more relief at people who were/are more likely to be low income/have more loans, as you had to be pretty dirt poor to qualify for pell grants IIRC.

I had more Berklee connections in 2007 than I ever will again. I think my time has passed. :crylaugh:

But that was when you qualified, right?

I don't think a person who qualified for a pell grant and now makes 90k a year is more deserving of having their loan repaid than someone who didn't qualify for a pell grant and now makes 60k a year.

Also targets people who went to higher cost universities because I believe the expense of the college you are attending also plays a role in whether you qualify for the Pell Grants or not.
