I know Pat said he wasn't calling me out, but for the record I never said anything about his guitar playing lol. The solos in Death And Destruction and The British Are Coming were cool. Not enough to win me over but fair play

Tired of Sex solo rips. Always really loved the Dope Nose solo, too.

Depending on what scene* we're talking, I think calling Rivers up there as one of the best is fair play - he has technical chops but also is better than most at using solos thematically in the songs. Falling For You isn't his best playing, but compositionally it's fantastic.

*like if we're going 90s alt I'm taking b0lly any day

Somewhat true though if you watched MTV from 1991-1995 you'd still see videos by 70's/80's acts (Tom Petty, Meat Loaf, etc.) as well as Guns N' Roses and Metallica. So, yes, if you want to define it stricly as "hair metal" than I suppose it's true but plenty of non-alternative types still made big dents.

The "garage rock killed nu metal" thing is even more ridiculous given that Linkin Park, Staind, Disturbed, Godsmack all continued to have #1 debuts and multi-platinum albums well into the 00's.

I don’t know if Pollstar has archival box office information, but I think that would be revealing.

I wonder if music media at the time pivoting heavily to grunge coverage, created an impression of a sea change, even if reality indicated otherwise.

The analogy that came to mind while looking through charts was that, like reactionary white culture’s narrative about a majority-minority country that the US is not yet, a narrative formed about an extinction level event, that wouldn’t arrive til sometime later.

If ever. Post grunge has big hair metal with a deep voice vibes

To say nothing of 90’s people like Rivers, Tom Morello, Butch Walker, John Feldmann kinda, who were literally hair guys gone grunge

    Alice N Chainz anyone?

I was just starting to come of age during that era and, given we didn't have the internet, we had to rely on magazine covers/radio, etc. Depending on where you lived, you were either experiencing a full blown alternative/grunge takeover OR you didn't have MTV or a modern rock station and it still seemed like Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp and Mariah Carey were the main talks of the town.

if it makes yall feel any better, the SZNS EPs might have broken my weezer fandom. seeing him in elf ears and a kilt writing abysmal songs might have been the last straw.

I was! Honestly, I’ve never heard anyone have a strong opinion on his playing either way

if you can sit through some truly atrocious vocals (he wasn't the singer), his pre-weezer metal band has some insane playing. he genuinely could have been a neo-classical stuff, which is generally music i kind of hate but certainly requires quite a bit of skill

Black mile is one of my favorite albums all time… even if blue is a classic, no way I was going to vote against black mile.

Nice to see most of us in here aren't clinically insane. I'm also saying this as a BIGTIME Manchester fan, especially with those first two records. Pivotal and influential to say the least, but Blue Album crushes nearly every album.

I’m not a huge Deftones fan but this post literally made my jaw drop lmao. Not even sure why lol I always understand that no single piece of art or an artist will work with everyone but yet I was not expecting to see such a post. Maybe it was seeing this comment in this thread / match up of all places that did it lol
