Sheesh 1994 really lets you know this is going to be a more chaotic and noisier affair than All Hail was. Unhinged.

    Whoa is W W A V V E a Deftones song? ... okay it's not but the intro definitely sounds like it.

EDIT: Hahahaha A Killing Word opening riff is the one that made me have a stupid grin the first time I heard it.

Yeah this is great. So happy that in 2022 I'm still getting Norma Jean records like this.

HOW does this band keep writing heavy parts that make me stop dead in my tracks and just listen in awe? Incredible.

    No Fun. Not Ever.

How am I just now noticing that there's a track called Any%? Really hoping it's a speedrunning reference and not just "hey, this sounds like a silly song title".

This album is pretty good, has a lot of heavy stuff going on with more varied experimental/melodic parts. Some of it blurs together but I hope it grows on my quickly.

Finishing up my first listen now. Didn't hit me as hard as All Hail did at first, but NJ albums always grow on me on repeated listens. The heaviness is on point and I'm always amazed that they can still do things that sound new after so long. I did feel like some of the more melodic/experimental moments didn't click as well as others, but like I said it'll probably grow on me.

This album has everything I like about NJ all wrapped in one. I also really appreciate the added weirdness that's interwoven into pretty much everything. Even "Call for the Blood" makes much more sense listening all the way through. I want these guys to keep going forever at this rate.

This is really, really good so far. Cory is just an incredible song writer.

Just finished this up, I'll agree it doesn't hit me quite as hard on first listen as All Hail did but I still think it's great and I probably just need some more time with it. Extreme quality throughout.

At a time when metalcore is so dominated by djenty chugging and gratuitous riffing (which is fine), it’s really cool to see this brand of metalcore (the best brand imo) still has something fresh to give. If only there were more bands doing it still.

Three listens today after not knowing this was coming until I saw it in the new release thread when I woke up, and this is so great.

Erratic history with Norma Jean for me:

remember buying Anti-Mother but it never did much for me.

Then nothing until randomly reading a review for Polar Similar at release in 2016 and absolutely loving that album.

Went back a little and revisited Redeemer and Wrongdoers but don’t recall anything with them.

Meridional was in heavy rotation for a bit and then fell off.

maybe listened to All Hail once or twice.

and now this beast comes out and captures me like Polar did.

definitely going to go back through their discography again. Or at least to when Cory joined as I know Bless the Child, at least, wasn’t him and that album wasn’t my jam.

  20. This, admittedly, beats the snot out of All Hail imo. But like I went on about earlier in the thread — can’t really listen to NJ anymore without the maga stuff in the back of my head. Not gonna pretend to be unimpressed by the music, just also can’t ignore that tainted feeling of disappointment it gives me. Wish I could separate it

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

yeah, while this is pretty good and an improvement over their last two, I just can't connect to their music in the same way anymore

really sucks because Wrongdoers was an absolute gamechanger for me when it dropped and I'm still pretty attached to it tbh. but that album was so good that everything since has felt like diminishing returns, and Cory being Cory just feeds into that feeling

Goddamnit Corey - I wanted to hate this because I hate your dumb ass views but I gotta give props when it’s due.. this record is fucking incredible.

I think I can separate the art from the artist and still enjoy this band (respect to those who can’t though - it’s your personal choice and yours alone) but I really hope Corey is a little less ignorant after his pandemic debacle.

My history with Norma Jean is probably pretty normal for most around my age (31). My friend showed me O God at the time when Christian metalcore ruled all, I liked it a lot, went back and liked Bless the Martyr and subsequently The Chariot, REALLY loved Redeemer, Anti Mother was… okay.

saw them live for the first time around Meridional, found Polar Similar decent enough, but the became OBSESSED with All Hail. I think the streamlined songwriting and clean production really nailed it for me. That’s usually more my style than the raw grittier writing in this one, but I love it as well.

now that ETID seems to be gone, are they the longest tenured and best metalcore band still kicking?

i wasn’t a huge etid fan, and even NJ aren’t my favorite, but I do think NJ are the best. Like I alluded to above you just don’t hear this kind of dynamic gutiarwork and songwriting in metalcore.
