Upon first listen, I am thoroughly whelmed. I'm sure my opinion is being in part influenced by The Circumstances, but large swaths of this album just reek of "I made a bot listen to DGD and these are the songs it wrote". There's nothing here I dislike, mind you, but also nothing I'm particularly taken by. Formulaic DGD is still good DGD, but I was hoping for more experimentation on an album this length and there's just not enough of it imo.

Obvious Circumstantial reasons aside, Tilian leaving would be good for this band at this point.

I think I’m fully sold on this. No huge “wow” moments, but it’s very solid the whole way through. The context of the album will be a hurdle hard to overcome for some, but as long as DGD doesn’t bring him back I can appreciate this for what it is, which is a good culmination of the sound they’ve been working on perfecting since Acceptance Speech.

Yeah it sounds like I enjoy this more than you (I think I have 5 or 6 listens) but I agree that it’s not very experimental for such a long album and it would be a good time to switch up the lineup, regardless of what Tilian did.

i saw some critiques that Will might be the real one to blame for things getting stale, and that line of thinking might have some merit.

Can't stop thinking about how I'd be loving this album & seeing them next week if T****n knew how to stop being a egomaniacal, manipulative creep for even a second.

This is the third of my favorite bands I've lost to this type of shit in the past two years. So many guys can't just enjoy having acclaim, talent, or success, unless it's an asset they can use to lord over other people. It's an sickness endemic to this industry, and it makes me so fucking angry.

I've never really liked his voice that much but with all the extra shit added his parts just annoy me now. Really hope they go with someone else next time.

i'm really digging this album actually, mostly because of Jon and Andrew. i think this could be Jon's best album, i feel like he's really pushing himself on here and he is hitting some impressively high pitches with his screams, like that harmony at the end of Feels Bad Man is crazy! and i really think Andrew's parts sprinkled throughout the album really add a lot and make the length of this album work because there is some more variety, like i really love For The Jeers, i want to hear more songs with that dynamic for sure.

i will say that besides all of the circumstances influencing opinions on this... Tilian's performance here is pretty generic. his peak was definitely the Mothership style, and idk he has a few cool parts here and there but i don't really feel like much that he is doing here stands out at all. it's certainly polished and still sounds good but it's not evolving.

Apparently Kurt has been crushing it on the songs he's been playing with them this tour. Any other point in time I would've said bring him back 100%, but this new Royal Coda stuff sounds so promising I don't know if I want them to lose that momentum. I honestly would be fine if Royal Coda, Secret Band, and Eidola took the guys' time for the foreseeable future though.

  16. the lyrics in particular though, those sure are big words from someone who's at least in timeout from his own band.

There's A LOT of lyrics that are ironic knowing the circumstances surrounding him now.

EDIT: I don't know if ironic is the best word choice, maybe the sentiment of "well well well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions"

I like these new songs, but I think this formula has come to a plateau. I keep singing bits and parts of songs in my head that eventually sing into existing songs because they're all beginning to sound the same. Almost like Tilian's register is becoming "stale"?

I think that even if Tilian didn't eff up, it'd be time for someone/something new and fresh. I think a new singer every couple albums or so actually worked well for this band haha.

i respectfully completely disagree about the formula plateauing. the songs are total ear worms. this and the last album kinda renders all their previous albums of this era completely unnecessary for me because now it feels like they are actually and finally “doing it right” and doing that consistently. the song writing proficiency is a new chapter for them, the old albums were a mess. but i did first have to hear it several times to come to that conclusion, not like that is a shocking phenomenon. and jon with his new melodic screamed choruses are something that is just totally a unique musical experience you wont get anywhere else.

that sounds great and I hope they do the same thing on the next album with a singer I like more lol. revisiting DBMII earlier this year made me realize how much I missed this bands vibe.

We reach for the longest shadow

This is a weird one for me to put in context with the rest, because my opinions seem conflicting. Is it the best Tilian album? Maybe. Is the formula getting stale? I can see that argument. I also think it's very consistent in quality all the way through, but I don't know if a single song would make my top 10 DGD songs, maybe not even top 20.

I disagree with this wholeheartedly, and was about to start typing out all the awesome songs on Acceptance Speech, Instant Gratification, Mothership, and Artificial Selection but that would take too long, haha.

Only halfway through this but so far feels much more like the spiritual successor to Mothership than their last two. idk how much is just the production, but it has more of that thick, atmospheric, layered feel.

I agree that the Tilian era has gotten stale while also admitting that's probably penalizing them unfairly for being too prolific. Will writes enough great shit to justify an 18-month album cycle, but you almost need to change up the vocals periodically to make it work. Seems almost everyone is in agreement that this would be an opportune time for the next DGD era for multiple reasons.
