Hahah fair enough! I might give it a second chance after all.. we just turned it off once the elves were introduced, but maybe I'll convince my fiance to keep going

The thing that makes me crazy about the Hobbit films is, if you watch the behind-the-scenes footage and stuff you can clearly see that the whole production got completely away from Peter Jackson and they did a ton of last minute scrambling trying to figure out what the hell to even try to put up on screen when they have the story from the book that they could have fallen back on. Yeah, The Hobbit is written in a breezy, fairy-tale-esque style that kinda blows by some stuff, but the story in the book does reference a decent amount of incident and things happening in Middle-Earth.

There are a few parts of FOTR the movie that I don't really care for, but honestly they were things that bothered me way back in 2001 when I first watched it on screen as a huge LOTR & movie nerd in college with a full head of hair.

My biggest gripe has always been that they dropped all of The Conspiracy Unmasked stuff for 'Frodo & Sam literally bump into Merry & Pippin in the woods and then Merry & Pippin proceed to just go along with them on a year-long epic apocalyptic quest'. I get that they were pressed for time and they had A LOT of story to try and tell, but I've always felt like a few minutes of screen time could have been taken away from something else and given to actually establishing Merry & Pippin's place in the story.

Some of the CGI stuff that's meant to be exciting - like The Fellowship on the collapsing stair columns in Moria - always just felt like it dragged on forever to me, but that kinda stuff was never why I was there, and it didn't hurt the movie really. The only part that I notice hasn't aged well for me that didn't bother me at all at the time is Aragorn vs. The Ringwraiths on Weathertop. Such a well-written part of the book that always fills me with dread and in the movie it's a really silly fight on what is painfully and clearly a set and Strider basically just whacks them a few times and then chucks a torch and hits one of them in the face.

There's a lot of First Age in this teaser. I thought that article said the show was mostly focusing on the Second Age...

Really worried that this is just going to... look bad. Like way too much CGI and not enough practical effects that made the originals work.

There's no way this will look worse than the Hobbit movies did. This trailer is a lot of fun. I just hope this series doesn't spawn endless MCU-style LOTR spinoff content.

That's a solid trailer. It looks way better than the SuperBowl one.

Visually it looks gorgeous. But like, what is the show about? Why are there hobbits? Are they going deep into the lore or just making things up?

This is kinda where I'm at - I think it looks incredible, but I really don't know what story it's telling. Could be good, could be bad I guess. I wish they had shown a little more faith in The Wheel of Time on Prime. That would make me feel a little more comfortable about this. They *really* rushed that show, and in my opinion, didn't really give that show a chance to succeed.

The Wheel of Time show nearly made me retroactively hate the books it was so bad.

I think it could have been good if they hadn't insisted on making each episode so short. The way the pilot episode ends is so rushed it's ridiculous.

According to what they’ve been saying/characters they’ve named, it’s the story of the making of the rings and the fall of Numenor, condensed from 500 years to “5 seasons of tv.” But also the trees of Valinor and Galadriel crossing the ice floes from before the first age are also in it haha

tbf to Amazon… Wheel of Time is a MASSIVE success. it ranked as the top show globally almost every week it released an episode. (I know you meant quality)

I'm glad it was such a success - it gives me hope that they'll trust the show a little more in Season 2 and let them spread their wings a little bit.

  19. In fairness to wheel of time, you gotta separate the show from the books. Two different mediums. No one should expect a beat for beat remake. And why would you want that.

That being said, the first season was rough lol.

this is my hope, too. and that COVID doesn’t wildly change the cast and script for the final two episodes again.

I wasn't necessarily crazy about the changes they made, because I like the story of the books and think that would have made for a great TV show, but I think the combination of the drastic changes with the - in my opinion - INSANELY rushed pacing that blew past or dropped so many important story beats just made it really hard for me to invest in the show and the story it was telling at all.

I think I would have enjoyed Season 1 if it had had a little more room to breathe and tell it's own story, either with longer episodes - in particular the pilot - or with more episodes in the season.

Yeah. In the later parts and briefly covered. It’s definitely more of a loose framework than a concrete story. I think it’s also in Unfinished Tales and other writings that were incomplete

Looks great…worried about the story. I know they have a lot to work off of but it’s probably a lot of inference and extrapolation (similar to the stretches in the hobbit) given how the silmarilion is like a text book more than an engaging narrative. I hope I’m wrong but I’ll watch either way.

I didn’t hate Wheel Of Time but some of the changes from the first book we’re odd and unnecessary (Perrins new backstory, Mats ending arc, Loial)
