I remember watching a lot of anime and getting a lot of delivery. That's about it.

After the first "2 weeks to curb the spread" of shutdowns and social distancing failed miserably our remote working was extended indefinitely with hopes things would be better by summer. But a coworkers husband was told at that point they would be working remotely at least through the end of the year and I remember thinking that seemed insane.

The other things I remember are just lots of walks in the park near my house and helping my 2 older kids transition from balance bikes to pedal bikes.

I think the only good thing about 2020 was the summer...I wasn't working and my friend had a pool. Pretty sure I was drunk for like 4 months straight.

I remember that a few weeks before everything shut down, there were rumblings about Covid and what happens if an outbreak happens here (unbeknownst to us, of course, it had already been here for months). During that time, one of the parents of a kid at the daycare my wife teaches at was being asked about it since she was a doctor. She shrugged it off and said not to get too worried. TWO WEEKS LATER, I think like maybe a week before everything went to shit, she showed up at the daycare in a mask, picked up her kid, said her son would not be back for a very long time, and then told the teachers, very gravely, to gather food, water, supplies, etc. and get masks because the whole world was about to fall apart. When my wife came home and told me that I remember us both sitting there quietly for a minute like “…uh oh.” The following week when the NBA shut down it was like “uh oh” and then the states started shutting down one after another like dominoes and it was like “UH OH.”

On the last day that both of our jobs were open, I joined my wife in picking up our kids as we told them to say goodbye to their friends they wouldn’t be seeing for a long time. When my son asked why we explained to him that there was a “sickness” and that we needed to be safe. He cried. When he returned the following year, some of his friends were just gone (they were a few months older so they got to start kindergarten before him) and he never saw them again. He still asks about them from time to time. What a strange thing.

One week before the Covid bomb dropped, the company I was working for at the time required all of us to attend this conference with over a thousand people in one building and often in one room. Wild to think about now. I remember wondering after the shutdown happened how many people in that conference would get sick and die because of it.

I think one of the hardest things about Covid, was not seeing my family for like....5 months and then my step father dying in November from cancer after only being diagnosed a month before. October 2020-June 2021 was probably the most fucking up time in my entire life.

I remember when it was announced that all non-essential businesses would be shut down in CO, and that included liquor stores and dispensaries. It led to HUGE lines and crowds for both, which almost certainly helped spread things here. Then they announced they would include liquor stores and dispensaries in the businesses that could stay open as a result lol.

They kept the Liquor stores open here but they shut down the recreational side of the dispensaries for like a month I wanna say....and when they opened back up, you HAD to order ahead and set a time to go pick it up. Couldn't just go walk in and poke around like you used to.

They closed the liquor stores in PA for like a month. I ended up buying gin for my dad from a bar that was selling off it’s stock.

So much of 2020 through now was just a blur. By mid-May we decided to escape to rural NC for a month. While there I interviewed for and got offered a new job and accepted right after we got home.

Was just getting used to the new job when it was election time and all of the rumblings about not accepting the results, pre-emptively discussing irregularities because the election was "unprecedented" with the amount of vote-by-mail. Then it all actually happened, culminating in January 6th.

Then we were buying a new house, moving to NC, and getting our house ready to sell. Got vaccinated. The Delta wave! We were there for 2 months then went on a month-long trip to the northeast. Got back, the kids were getting ready to start school. Got into that routine and then it was Halloween. Thanksgiving. Rumblings about Omicron. Christmas. 2022! Omicron in full swing! I turned 40. My whole family got Covid. 2 years of the pandemic! My wife turned 40. Omicron sub-variants evading vaccines. Suddenly it's summer again, I'm back in the northeast for the month and it simultaneously feels like only a month has passed and a full decade has passed.

I’m so sorry. I feel you. It was an incredibly dark period. Many, many months of no family, cancelled nieces’ and nephews’ birthday parties, my own kids’ birthdays, holidays, cancelled vacations, etc. Summer of 2021 was when the shit really hit the fan for us. I was going through a roughly two month period where I’d been interviewing for this position I really wanted but ultimately didn’t get. A week before I got the news about the job, a tornado blew through our neighborhood and knocked a tree down on top of our house and both of our cars while we were inside the house. Traumatized the shit out of all of us. Then we were forced to move in back and forth between my parents and my mother in-law’s until insurance put us all in a little hotel room for a month (where I got the news about the job I didn’t get and then sat down, put my head in my hands, and sobbed), and then they moved us again into an apartment for the next five months while the house was being repaired. There were tons of delays because of shortages and shipments so they couldn’t start work for the longest time. Our insurance ran us through hell. My job became increasingly toxic to the point that I started taking antidepressant medication for the first time in years before finally quitting my job two days before Christmas. My wife’s grandmother died of Covid in September (also while we were staying in the hotel), on Halloween my son was attacked by a pitbull/boxer mix and he had to get stitches in his face (he’s now terrified of wind, storms, and dogs), and then a week before Christmas my wife’s uncle died suddenly of Covid as well. Absolute hell of a nearly two year period where things felt supremely hopeless.

I guess the caveat is that things are still supremely hopeless, but at least we got that $1400 check to live off for the next decade. Thanks, Mitch. You sack of shit.

My wife and I playing co-op Stardew Valley fucking saved our minds during lockdowns. It's not too difficult to play armchair psychologist and see why spending hours every day micromanaging a farm appealed to us so much.
