  1. No question, you're both right. This is about opening the door for states and municipalities to legally fund (and make no mistake, in the long term, favor and segregate) increasingly religious public schools. It's everything we talked about in the context of Betsy DeVos, right? The chipping away of church/state separation is in some ways a mirror image of the campaign against Roe and Casey.

This is a new level of brazenness. I don't think a lot of court-watchers are shocked or anything, but resistance to this line of jurisprudence is virtually impossible now that they've explicitly rejected the Lemon Test.

the difference is that this would not ever happen

im sorry but this is a naive perspective. its not something that ends with just allowing teachers to pray on school ground

  3. I think liberals and the left, even at the media gatekeeper level, have a history of not making mountains out of objectively unwinnable molehills. There's more than enough real oppression of religious minorities out there to focus on.

And yeah I think you're missing the extent of the decision's impact here. They explicitly threw out the Lemon Test, which instructs the court to evaluate whether government aid to a religious entity served a religious or secular purpose, the latter being acceptable. Soon enough, there will be test cases popping up all over the country for increasingly-pervasive state-supported religious influence in public schools.

Also any time a guy is like I was just innocently being a good Christian and was chastised for no reason something bad happened and they're lying

So many of these decisions are being made with religion playing a major part. However, who is actually going to church?

I’m 35, and don’t think I have a single friend that regularly attends a church service of any type. Wasn’t there studies a couple years ago saying that organized religion was declining in the US. Can we please speed that process up?

At the risk of being accused of saying “just vote”, the people that vote in much larger numbers/%s are the ones still going to church haha. Especially down south

  9. It will continue and probably speed up, but cultural inertia comes at the expense of enthusiasm and organizing for all those values. For all the jokes we make about disarray on the left, the lock-step execution of the religious & conservative project really is the key to their success.

ETA: And I don't just mean the Federalist Society and corporate boardrooms, I mean all the way down to voter participation.

I put on last week tonight while eating lunch because I thought it was the Rent thing and I wanted to watch it but it was apparently about water in the west.

It’s really good, but aslo they have Brian Cox as God at the end it’s fantastic

Not regularly, but I do go to church at least for the holidays like Christmas, Easter, etc. and some other times in between. My pastor uploads the masses to YouTube. I don’t watch it every week but I do occasionally.

Probably one of the only people in this thread that does lol

Watching conservatives suggest how a gay teacher shouldn't even ever have the need to mention they are gay or talk about their partner and so the don't say gay laws are totally fine, and then turn around and suggest that its totally appropriate for a coach to be praying in front of their players is definitely on brand for conservative hypocrisy

So am I wrong, or is the government turning into the American Version of the Vatican?

I've done a lot of crying and thinking this weekend. Trying to figure out if I can ever move out of the country at this fucking point. Next they are going to dispose of women under the age of 40 who aren't able to have children.

    I'm fucking terrified.

I drink like 3 beers before each flight. I don’t completely hate flying but that just helps calm my nerves and then I can usually fall asleep on the plane.
