Discussion in 'Music Forum' started by bradsonemanband, Mar 30, 2016.

  1. 1. bradsonemanband - I couldn't find any spare time to start working on my song. Mostly because I kept changing my mind about what song to do. Last minute (literally) I decided that I wanted to re-work one of their interlude tracks, so I chose this one, "The 1975" (the intro track from their debut). I recorded it in about 20 minutes, uploaded it, and then published the compilation for everyone to hear, haha. I hate doing last minute covers because they're so stressful, but I also like doing it because I'm generally pretty happy with how they turn out anyway. So yeah, I hope you guys like this short and sweet little ditty.

    2. @bertbro - Like everyone else is saying, DAMNNNN! I listened to this when you submitted it and was immediately blown away. You killed it.

    3. @elemenohpe - This is my favorite 1975 song and you did awesome, as always. I always tell myself I need to sit down and learn that main guitar riff. Great job, my man!

    4. @angel paste - I love this! It's so different, but so great!

    5. @InfiniteArms - I love your covers. They're so dark and haunting. Can't wait to hear your Halloween songs.

    6. @thesoftskeleton - The music is beautiful. Your vocals are beautiful. This song is beautiful. BEAUTIFUL! :) Please do more of these compilations. This is my favorite cover on here.

    7. elemenohpe - Nice job doing two covers! Both of them are awesome. I like how bluesy this one sounds.

    8. @Things So Impossible - I always love your covers. Your voice is so unique and great. This is one of those songs that is so great that it's borderline impossible to cover and do it justice, with all of those emotional vocals on the original, especially near the end of the song. You nailed it though! Such a good cover! One of my favorites on here, for sure.

Everyone did so great! This compilation didn't get the biggest turnout ever, but I think it turned out perfectly. Short and sweet. All killer, no filler. Great job, everyone! Thanks for submitting!

I'll officially announce the Halloween compilation on Thursday, and we'll call out songs then. But definitely get those gears turning about what you want to cover, or feel free to write an original too!

Now I'm gonna sit back and listen to this again................

Thanks! I'll definitely do the halloween one. I did a few of the AP comps but had a different username.
I usually go too crazy with instrumentation so I'm glad keeping it simple paid off! The yodeling part is my favorite and part of me wants to just make my own song out of that.

Thanks! Think I transposed it up a minor third so maybe that's where it comes from?

think I will do Tango Til They're Sore by Tom Waits for the halloween comp, doubt anyone was gonna choose that but just in case.

I've never really listened to The 1975 outside of a couple songs, didn't really grip me, but I like this comp.

@bradsonemanband - Very simple, but I like when there's an intro type song to these comps.

@bertbro - Your cover sounds like it was made in a professional studio. Also is very well done performance wise. Maybe one of the best covers these comps have gotten.

@elemenohpe - Your first cover is cool, maybe a little rough production wise, but that's not entirely a bad thing. Sounds very raw. Same goes for the second one, but I like it a little more. Overall, good job.

@angel paste - This one sounds great, love the vocal layering and overall atmosphere to it.

@InfiniteArms - I'm not always a fan of kind of simplistic acousticy covers, but yours is done really well. The guitar sounds very crisp, so good job on that. I'm awful at recording acoustics. haha

@thesoftskeleton - Love the instrumentation on here, very atmospheric. Tambourines (I think that's what it is) are always a huge plus. Your voice adds a cool layer to it all too.

@Things So Impossible - I like this a lot, the guitar and piano sound great together, and your voice has a really cool contrast with the instrumentation.

    Good job everyone!

Nice job everyone. The mix on the Sound cover is way better than I expected and the cover was really good. The Robbers cover jumps out too. The vocals remind me of someone, but I can't quite pinpoint who.

@bradsonemanband - I'm psyched that someone chose one of the interlude songs! Definitely thinking outside the box. Great production value on this one; your guitar tone is so clear and resonant. This cover is so soothing, and I think it's really cool to start the comp off with the opening track from the debut album!

Thank you for the kind words on my song. I'm glad it didn't disappoint someone who likes the original so much. And saying it's one of your favorites means a lot to me!

@bertbro - This cover is incredible. Seriously, damn. This really makes me want to learn to sing and play properly! This cover should be on the radio right now and I hope you are a professional artist because this sort of talent should not go unrecognized! Taking on "The Sound" is such a tall order, but you captured the energy and groove perfectly.

I'm glad you're enjoying my cover! That's super high praise coming from someone so talented; I'm completely blown away by your cover.

@elemenohpe - This cover has such a fun vibe to it, especially the ending with the layered vocals! I love the lo-fi sound. The "that's what she said" part almost made me spit out my drink so thanks for that. I like how you ended with the lead riff too. Very cool.

@angel paste - I've been especially into this song lately so I'm psyched that someone chose it, and covered it so well. This is so cool; it makes me rethink doing my covers so straightforward. I'm really impressed by your creativity. Great production, and very professional sounding.

Thank you for being interested in my voice! I do have some other music out there. I've participated on the Motion City Soundtrack, Weezer, Summer Mixtape, and Saves the Day comps here. And I have a YouTube channel where you can see videos of me and my brother (DashboardProfessional from other comps) playing covers. My channel is called thingssoimpossible. Again, your cover is amazing.

@InfiniteArms - You killed this cover; really fitting vocals. There's so much soul here, and I can see myself listening to this a lot. I'm really happy that you did this song because it shows the somber side of The 1975, and it really rounds out this comp.
The acoustic guitar sounds great and really adds to the mood of the song. I love how your cover fades out; again this makes it fit so immaculately where it is in the comp (props to Brad for the order).

Sorry I claimed the song you wanted! I'm really glad you did the song you did though; the comp wouldn't have been nearly as good or complete without it. Thanks for the compliment on my vocals!

@thesoftskeleton - This is so, so, so beautiful. Really the best word for it is "enchanting." Again, fantastic production. I listened to this particular cover on a loop for a while today; it's just so serene. Thank the heavens you chose this song because the world deserves this cover haha. The vocals are simply beautiful. I'll be listening to this each morning for a while. Great work and please participate again!

@elemenohpe - Your vocals fit really well on this version! I love the soul and personality you imbue the words with. Your performance of this just comes across as so honest; especially the last few lines. Like the cover of Antichrist on here, I'm thankful for this song for slowing the comp down. Great version.

Things So Impossible - The original song is a masterpiece and means the world to me. I kind of wish I had the technology to make it sound more polished and add all the gorgeous layers, especially at the end. In any case, this was probably my favorite song I've done for the comps, and I hope people find my version to be worthwhile and not too straightforward a cover. Thanks for listening!

@Benjamin Lee - Thanks for commenting even though you didn't participate on this one; I appreciate the kind words about my song!

This compilation came out really well in my opinion; I actually find it satisfying that it doesn't have that many tracks. I think the track order is superbly organized, thanks Brad. Somehow the stars aligned and we ended up with a perfect mix of songs to represent the band. I'm pretty sure I'll be listening to this comp more than any previous one. I find it super cool how we got basically an even split of tracks from the discography. Every cover on here is fantastic, honestly. Thank you all for a short and very sweet comp!

PS: Hopefully we can revisit The 1975 at some point because I really want to hear covers of Sex and Paris haha.

    @bradsonemanband I forgot two things:

    1. A++ on the cover art for the comp. It fits so well.
    2. I'm really amped that I've now gotten to open and close a comp, so thank you!

    1. @bradsonemanband - Sucks you had to rush this one... but that's the Brad I've known! You were so prolific last month and this month seems like the opposite. Regardless, you did a nice job. Your voice compliments this dreamy-atmospheric vibe really well. I just wish you could've done a longer song like Sex. Bummer you had to bail :( . Thanks for running these AND participating, even if you're short on time.

    2. @bertbro - Floored. If your voice wasn't so different from Matty's I could've been easily convinced this was a demo version of the song or something. So perfect... the vocals, the music, the mix. You better keep submitting! Oh and those druuuums! Amazing.

    3. elemenohpe - Chocolate

Thanks! When I learned it the album way I was really put off by how hard it was to get those simple riffs to sound clean together... that's why I dirtied it up with lots of distortion, hah!

Thanks! When I called this song I put together a playlist of other covers, live version and remixes. Listened to it several (several) times and drew inspiration from a few of the covers (Knuckle Puck's version on Punk Goes Pop whatever-who cares? was where I took most of the vocal cues from).

As I was grazing that aforementioned playlist of Chocolate covers/remixes/live cuts I played it at work a few times. Told my co-workers sorry for playing the song 8 times in a row but I'm looking to find some inspiration for this cover... the only thing I know I want to do for sure is put a sample of Michael Scott saying "that's what she said". Glad someone else got a kick out of it as much as I did!

Thanks. I seem to get the "raw" and "garage" description a lot. I just don't know much about recordng and this is the best I can do. haha. Everyone on this comp submitted some amazingly produced tracks. I hope you're feeling up to submitting to next month's comp.

    4. @angel paste - Just like everyone else has said, all the effects and tricks on this cover make it craaazzy good. I think the use of studio effects is what makes The 1975 so cool and you really did their style justice by putting your own little twist on it. Also, the use of panning is phenomenal. It's a trip to listen to with headphones... made my head dizzy at points like the first time I heard Such Great Heights with headphones on. Good job!

    5. @InfiniteArms - I don't remember the original version of this song but I'm def going to check it out now. Your lower register vocals really bring out the dark side of this (most of the time) poppy band. Creepy lyrics and a brooding beat all add to this effect. I could see this on the Halloween comp even! It's spooky and ominous. Great job!

    6. @thesoftskeleton - Like angel paste's cover, I'm really impressed by the amount of programming that goes into these covers. Fantastic interpretation. Your vocals are angelic in a melancholy way. They're soft amidst the buzzing electronics, pulsing lows and mechanical drums... amazing juxtaposition.

    7. elemenohpe - If I Believe You

Blues was my inspiration for this cover. I wanted to take that slow moving bass line, add some open chords and really let loose on the lead guitar. After getting all the rhythm stuff done, the bluesy vibe didn't feel right for the lead guitar so, I went with a slower, effect laden sound. Wanted to do a jazzy guitar solo instead of the songs sax solo, it turned out alright considering I was under the gun.

Thanks! Your comment when I picked the song made me decide to focus more on layering back-up vocals on top of the take I recorded live with the rhythm guitar. I realized that behind all of The 1975's studio tricks are some soulful tunes that are just as endearing when they're stripped down.

Thanks so much. I seriously put a microphone in a room with my amp and just belted it out while I played through the song. No metronome so that made recording the other instruments kind of hard but, the soul of that live performance was the skeleton of the song for me. If I wasn't under the gun I would've probably overthought this song too much, did it to a click and lost some of that intimacy.

Thanks. I also like this one more than Chocolate. Both were a lot of fun to work on though!

    8. @Things So Impossible - Excellent as always. Cool unplugged approach, sounds like D/C covering The 1975 with Chris Connely singing. ;) - When I see your name next to a song, I know I'm going to enjoy it!
