True but also doesn’t explain why so many care about made up things like critical race theory in elementary schools or why so many hate the idea of student debt relief. So it’s even worse because a huge portion of this country just loves hurting people different from them and will eat up anything that gets to that

Fair point but isn’t lot of the people who hate CRT just parents who think it’s indoctrinating their kids. And a lot of people who don’t want student loan debt are people who already paid off their loans through “hard work” so it’s unfair and all that nonsense. They think it affects them but it really doesn’t

 

Everyone who only eat gluten free are probably relieved haha

 

Maybe on the CRT point but I still don’t see how it affects you if someone else gets their loans paid off and you already paid yours off. You just don’t want them to be helped in that case. If you think about it from masks in schools I remember reading that the majority of people showing up at school board meetings bitching about kids wearing masks didn’t even have kids in the school. It’s just wild what the right will get behind, they mobilize on issues that don’t affect them and then sit by while wages stagnate and healthcare premiums go up.

 

The real story about this election is that the Greens scored the most first preference votes in many seats - including once-safe, heartland conservative seats - and we have 12 more women in parliament, including 7 independent candidates who ran grassroots campaigns and were supported by the crowd-funded initiative, Climate 200.

This ended up being a climate change, equality, fed up with the status quo election result. This election will end up with a far more progressive government than I ever hoped for, thanks to the hard working volunteers who went door to door for the Greens and independents. Without the popularity and power of the Greens and independents in Australia today, a Labor win would’ve meant more of the same but slightly less horrible; Albanese would’ve appealed to centrist donors & voters.

People have proven that they’re not “quiet Australians” anymore - we’ve spoken up for something better. Now, the pressure is on Labor to really enforce change. It’s been an amazing night.

 

Meanwhile I can't remember what it feels like to be optimistic about America

I’ve been saying this for a while. Boomers are half good, and will be rational voters at time that will vote against Republicans if they think Republicans are going to fuck over old people.

GenX is much worse in terms of who makes up their right wing ranks IMO
