The biggest thing I gathered from this was the same thing I've been thinking since the first one. They should have made a series of films with Newt and his friends going on fun beast adventures and they should have made a series of films based on the Dumbledore/Grindelwald conflict. Those two things never should have been forced to coexist in the same series.

    Other random thoughts:

Tina gets a few mentions and shots, but Nagini doesn't get acknowledged at all? Seems odd.

Isn't it mentioned in the books that the deathly hallows symbol (line, circle, triangle) was adopted by Grindelwald and his movement, similar to the Nazis and the swastika, and in modern times is more associated with him and the horrible things he did rather than the hallows themselves? Yet in this movie, he's got a nice little GG logo that his followers use?

I agree. I would have skipped the Newt movies though. The creatures are just not that interesting to me.

I honestly don’t remember how things ended for Nagini in the last film. I’m gonna check wiki. All I found is that she shouts at Credence not to join GG and that’s it for her. I don’t remember anything about it. I guess she wasn’t good enough to join the team in this one or just gave up on credence and moved on with her life to eventually be beheaded by Neville.

oh yea, his new symbol stood out to me too. And that’s why. The deathly hallows is absolutely his symbol in the books and he wears one around his neck in the first film. Not sure why they didn’t use it here.

I looked to see what other people have been saying about the symbol and some seem to think that it's because so many people irl have got it tattooed and on clothing and whatnot. WB marketing must not have wanted people to be upset that it's actually just a fascist symbol or something.

Another thing that confuses me is how there's a line that specifically mentions that the events of the first film happened a couple years ago. Not sure how they plan to explain the time jump from 1926ish to 1945 in the next two movies (if they happen). Also, explain why Dumbledore doesn't take out Grindelwald in those 19 years, because we know they're big battle takes place at the end of the war.

possibly. I have a sticker of it on my car window. I view it like Luna’s father does and of the hollows themselves despite what GG used it for.

that’s a good point. This film starts just over a year after the first movie. Lally says so when she is probing to Jacob she knows who he is. Wiki claims the second movie was in 1927. We are not too far from that one so even if that was late 27, this would be the latest early 28. So at best 17 years until the final battle. Maybe they should wait awhile and make the next one set in the 30’s and then wait and then 45 for the last one.

also, Bunty asks for 6 copies of Newts case. But only 5 are used in their actual plan. Even if I misheard and she meant 5 copies to make 6 with the OG, that’s still one too many. I kept expecting at least one more random person to show up as another distraction based on that.

Oh yea, and another thing. Yusuf loses the memories of his sister to be with GG. But he doesn’t actually do anything while there. He’s not apart of any attacks, doesn’t kill anyone, doesn’t do anything beyond say he was supposed to spy for Dumbledore. The first time he gets put to the test he turns on the GG gang. So what was the point? Poor dude loses his memories of his beloved sister to contribute nothing for the cause? When he first lost the memories I assumed he would actually do something and at the end of the movie Dumbledore reveals that they planned ahead and had him put memories in a pensieve in advance and gets them back in the end. But they don’t bother following up on that because he’s a nothing character. Just so many weird choices in this movie.

And I don’t believe that we needed a two hour plus movie to break a locket with some blood in it completely by random luck.

Echo everything here about having Fantastic Beasts be it’s own thing and First Wizard War separate. This one got me really annoyed by the incompetence of the Ministry. Like they know when HP casts a patronus or blows up his aunt immediately, but can’t recognize they’ve been over-run by terrorists who actually elected the leader 2 days after he’s cleared of all crimes for no reason. And they also throw out the entire democratic election system after they find out from the evil candidate that a magic horse has been born.

My mom had forgotten about Credence entirely and asked me if it was Snape when he first showed up. She also forgot who Theseus was, but I don’t blame her. I only remember his name because I saw the movie today. I will likely forget it by Monday.

this really doesn't have a better selling point that merely being noticeably superior to TCoG. this was a snooze, and they even kind of mess up the obligatory references to past films by making them simultaneously too inside baseball for non-fans and too obvious for those more well-versed (ex. "this is the room we require") glad this appears to be hitting the breaks before we get the 4th and 5th of these

He’s a big improvement from Depp. Feels like someone Dumbledore would have fallen for.

i can honestly see this doing far better (as well as the last FB movies remaining in development at this point) had JKR learned to shut the fuck up

Do any actual Harry Potter fans care about the fantastic beasts series? I love the HP books but I absolutely 0% interest in these.

Sure. I’m interested in Jude Law as Dumbledore and Mads is a much better Grindelwald. The less Newt/creatures the better for me.

I think it goes back to the idea that Fantastic Beasts was the wrong series to tell this story. The 1st one was the best because it’s about fun finding the beasts. But then it goes into this subplot with Creedence and Colin Farrel that doesn’t fit and turns out that subplot is the next two movies but you’re now stuck with the main cast from the fun beast adventure. A little bit of focus instead of jumping right into the other big wizarding war would have gone a long way here.

The first movie is sooooooooo boring to me. I kind of liked it at first but I watched it last year with my mom for Christmas and my god it just wouldn’t end. What a slog.

It’s hard for me to call a movie bad, so I won’t, but I agree the first is really boring, even just as a
Even just from the title itself you have no idea what the movie’s about. It’s like seeing The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The Jedi.

Tbh I don’t think Rowling’s opinion on certain matters is effecting the box office and if it is it’s minimal at most. It’s that not nearly as many people are interested in the fantastic beasts stories compared to the stories that preceded it. There was 1 fantastic beasts book if I’m correct. It’s just not connecting with the audience it’s trying to capture.

If a new film continuing the story with HP and friends was released this year it would easily open to >$100 million. Hogwarts Legacy will most likely sale a lot of copies as well when it releases this year.

This. I feel like people are overestimating how much JKR's comments are playing a part in this box office failure.

I think it's silly to assume the Rowling controversy had nothing to do with it, but I agree that it's probably not the main driving factor, it's a combination of issues.

The first film did well at the box office because it had a simple effective hook as well as the HP nostalgia effect. The second film didn't. Even the title was confusing. Then you add in that by the time it came out there was already controversy about Johnny Depp. Since then there's been an almost constant, low-level drama going on with JKR, Depp, all sorts of things, people have just tuned out, especially since the second film wasn't bad so much as completely and utterly forgettable.

And yeah, leaning into fanservice to try and salvage the series didn't work for Star Wars, and any chance it had of working here went up in smoke with JKR's comments. It was one of the main things that disappointed me about the second film back when I wanted this series to be good.
