That's the exact reason I didn't watch it for the longest time because stuff like that doesn't sit well with me, but I actually think they handled it pretty well and spun it in an interesting way.

There's a lot of stuff I won't watch out there because they use rape as purely shock value or treat as the only way a woman can experience trauma/character growth and it's fucking disgusting. I think Goblin Slayer or something uses it like that and I'm just like "get the fuck outta here with that".

Forgive me if I'm wrong about Goblin Slayer, I could be thinking of something else, but I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.

When a romcom or something just SHOVES it in because they need a storybeat or something to make the male look heroic and the woman look weak. I literally just stopped reading a manga because they pulled that out and it ruined the whole thing for me.

Well with Goblin Slayer, if I recall correctly, it happens in the first episode and no more beyond that.

As for why, the way I interpreted it in Goblin Slayer is that the goblins are supposed to be this extremely dangerous force without scruples that everyone underestimates because they're seen as worthless and meaningless faff, and so we see them through the eyes of this inexperienced and underprepared party that suffers for not taking proper precautions.

I guess they could've just had the party get slaughtered and that would've sold the same message. I didn't see it as just being about shock value though; I thought it was meant to demonstrate just how awful these creatures are.

I do understand what you mean though. Actually, there's one anime in particular that I'm aware of that I will avoid like the plague for this reason: Redo Of Healer. Warning: Do not look that anime up under any circumstances if this subject triggers you in any way.

It just shows how terrible of a writer (and maybe even as a person) you are if that's what you rely on to make an "interesting" story or feel like your giving a female character depth.

I understand that it's a very real thing that happens to people, but that's almost never how they portray it in the story. It's always a sick gimmick they use.

And thank you, I will avoid that show like the plague as well

I don't know enough about Japan and how things are over there to accurately discuss this, but based on things I've read, I wonder if it's a matter of cultural dissonance.

Anime seems to be a lot more open with certain tropes and topics of conversation because it's my understanding that those tropes and topics are looked upon differently there than here. Some topics that might be taboo are openly played for laughs, especially since it's a cartoon.

This wouldn't be, of course, at least not to my knowledge, but I wonder if there might be less scrutiny about how it's used or portrayed for similar reasons?

I am mildly curious what examples you're thinking of when talking about it being used as a "sick gimmick". I don't think I've encountered anything that goes that route.

We already talked about how it's used in Shield and Slayer, and Redo is a dumpster fire. Is there anything else?

I could link you to some manga, but it's not just a Japanese thing, I'm only talking about it in the anime thread because it was brought up in here.

Using that kind of content is prevalent in all types of media internationally and especially in American fiction.

Here's a link to a pretty decent, broad strokes overview in like a buzzfeed sort of way of how these tropes are used often and quite often done terribly. The Buffy one is something that has always stood out to me: Six Rape Tropes and How to Replace Them

Also, sorry if this is uncomfortable with anyone, I'm trying my best to spoiler tag and be as vague as I can because I don't want to trigger anyone. I graduated college for screenwriting and I very rarely get to talk about stuff like this, but I enjoy discussing storytelling and seeing how others perceive the media they are consuming.

I actually was going to come back in here and suggest we maybe take the conversation elsewhere because I also feel uncomfortable discussing this stuff here and I've been deliberately trying to avoid being too specific for that very reason.

I'll read that article when I have time to properly sit and digest it.

I was more wondering about specific anime because of the watchlist I have that I pull from. Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero, I knew about in advance, but I didn't know if there was anything else I should be aware of before I plunge into them.

I'm sure I'll figure it out on my own though, so never mind.

I have a long list on my phone of all the anime I've watched (which is not ALL because I don't remember everything from when I was a kid, etc) and I have small ratings on there of "not good" "terrible" and such so I might go through that and see if I can find anything.

Either way, I can see why people would be naturally cautious of stuff like that. I'm definitely one of those people, but I think Shield Hero handled it pretty well and shows just how much those things can destroy your life and how he recovers from it.

I'm looking forward to the next season.

I legitimately just started reading this the other day by chance and was like "oh, this would make a decent romcom, I'm surprised it isn't an anime" and here we are

God, the first episode of Season 2 for Shield Hero was annoying. I forgot how punchable some people are (not the main cast) and Rishia's story is just stupid.

Great OP, I’m in. Wish more shows would do the 26 episode run, a lot of slice of life/romcoms feel super rushed

The title is nonsense. Even in the manga I don't remember it being referenced until like 20 chapters in or something haha I could be wrong, but that's how little it has to do with anything

Excited because Date A Live IV has started. Gonna wait until the season is done to binge it, but I'm really jazzed.

Some people seem disappointed they're not redoing the Itsuka Disaster arc since they butchered it in Date A Live III, but it's my understanding they adapted some of the missing bullet points in this first episode, so to me it's whatever.

Pretty much the only anime I watch are adventure/action/fantasy stuff. Would I still like Shinkai's movies? They always came across as more focused on the romance element than any fantasy element
