NGL, didn't even know those were options for skipping work. Now I've got some new excuses in my repertoire. Thanks, Clay.

It's about time, although it should end immediately, instead of until May when another COVID wave will justify them renewing it again

    * Jimi's former roadie wrote in his own book that the manager confessed to him, but that was explicitly about life insurance and the content of the confession doesn't match the conspiracy that he wasn't full of wine lol

uhh no I don't think that's the take.

For one, 50m was woefully low in number and the overall mobilization had underwhelming geographic impact compared to the potential and the expectation of the unions that were involved in coordinating this. More than 5x as many Indians mobilized in nearly every state to support of the farmers' protest very recently.

I also can't stress enough how weird and chauvinist it is for some random white guy* to characterize this union effort (let alone the 8-figure number of people who participated) as "anticapitalist" with no basis whatsoever except his expectation of his own audience's willingness to give clout for buzzwords. I would love if that's what it was. It very much unequivocally was not.

people gotta learn stay in their lane or at least read something about what they're tweeting about.

The only Matt Y tweets that should be posted in here are ones like these where they’re surrounded by other tweets murdering him

  21. I gotta say, this thread has definitely validated/solidified my choice to not become a feral twitter creature (unfortunately the inevitable result if I started using it lol) but I really appreciate all of you for bringing some of it to me.

But what's the deal with this Yglesias guy? Like how does he have all the trappings of someone I'd expect to agree with but also tweet like such a fucking trashbin?

oh you know what, it's just that he's not anti-vax and I didn't read the whole first sentence about the Niskanen Center on the Google result lmao

"The Niskanen Center is a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that advocates environmentalism, immigration reform, civil liberties, and strengthening [[here's a line break in the Google info box where I stopped and came here to ask lol]] social insurance around market-oriented principles. The center is named after William A. Niskanen, an economic adviser to President Ronald Reagan."

This makes so much more sense. I've been thinking this whole time he's some kind of contrarian liberal.

I do largely agree with this take, especially considering the context of the farmers protests of last year which drew widespread support even outside of India (for a while, you couldn't go more than a block in my predominantly South Asian neighborhood in NYC without seeing a sign of support), but I do think a reaction such as the one in the tweet speaks to just how unimaginable even a "below expectations" version of a mass strike is here in the US. Like, we've been treating the series of strikes and unionization here as a major revival of the labor movement (it's been great, don't get me wrong, but I don't think we're there yet), when a demonstration that drew several times more people than the largest series of demonstrations in US history (the BLM protests of 2020) did. Much bigger country sure, but I think the ignorance of the tweet stems predominantly from a place of being blown away at how impossible that kind of movement seems here. Of course, that means that we should learn from it as opposed to writing our own motivations onto it, as you mentioned
