    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

The Breeders appear to be teasing an announcement for something for Monday. Could be anything, but it’s been a few years since they last toured… Wonder if they’ll be in play this year

I wonder how much crossover we're going to get with When We Were Young, lineup wise? I've been thinking about selling my pass for WWWY and saving the cost of airfare if there's enough of that lineup playing Riot Fest (Paramore, BMTH, Jimmy, The Maine, TWY being the big ones).

  3. I didn’t look at which support is on which dates in the US, but 1) there’s no Chicago date and 2) good news bad news, MGK and iann dior are starting the EU/UK run on 9/17 so they’re both out.

44phantom and iann dior are opening his EU dates during Riot weekend.

It seems MGK is playing Lolla based on routing and Avril is opening the dates before and after Lollapalooza, so she might be in it too

At the risk of becoming the joke of this thread- does anyone else see Olivia Rodrigo as a dark horse candidate to headline Sunday?

she would sort of fill the MGK slot from last year (mainstream artist with debatable pop punk credibility, drawing some of the traditional Lolla crowd to riot fest)

also she’s said that she wants to “earn her way”, and is playing “small” (Aragon Ballroom) rooms on her first tour and is rumored to not be on Lolla this year.

She’ll surely be a Lolla headliner once she gets a bit more music released, but for the time being, why not settle for headlining Chicago’s 2nd biggest festival?

Riot fest would especially help her credibility if she wants to lean into the success of Good 4 U on future releases and position herself as a guitar driven pop/rock artist (not sure if that’s her plan, just spitballing here).

obviously if riot did book her, they’d have to flank her with “real punk” side stage headliners to appease the base.

I’m not saying i think it will happen- Op Ivy or Bauhaus are probably still 10x more likely. But I think this might be the only year for riot fest where it would be possible to book her- and I think it would be a huge get for the fest.

Am I crazy for thinking this?

  6. it would be some kind of coup but the impact on the crowd/scene feels a touch disqualifying

You can pad the lineup for the day but you can't pad out the kids-and-parents groups who would either mess with the vibe or show up super late in the day.

  7. I'd be ecstatic but I think that's a big stretch.

I say give them their own little island. Find some Lolla-esque acts that could also conceivably fit at riot and let them have the main stage the whole day.

that gives regulars more room to maneuver around all the other stages throughout the day.

That's like expecting Halsey to play Psycho in Las Vegas because Trent Reznor produced her last record.

Olivia Rodrigo couldn't be bothered with Riot Fest. And I dunno, can we stop calling artists "pop-punk" in the same breath that we're claiming genre to be dead just because they have 1-2 songs that land on the "New Punk" playlist on Spotify because the label paid for the placement?

(Not saying that happened with Olivia Rodrigo because she skipped all that but... You know what I mean.)

Since no one seemed to share this here, looks like Avril (and MGK, but he was never in speculation this year) are extremely likely for Lollapalooza based on their tour dates.

Edit: JK it was posted above oops sorry

yea, seems like 2 club shows and a small (but pretty loaded) fest. but still puts them in live show shape a month out from riot so id still say possible.

Her last date on the tour is the Thursday night of Lolla and she isn’t playing Osheaga, which he is also doing that weekend. Either way we will find out tomorrow morning though.

only saying this since he was there last time misfits played, but Rob Zombie is out. new tour and is in chicago 8/5. as far as nu-metal package tours go, this is a fun one with mudvayne, static-x, and powerman 5000. pure unadulterated nostalgia!

It's still straight-up wild to me that anybody thought she was in the mix in the first place. Adult contemporary artists in bondage pants who had dance-pop and Christian music phases when the initial gimmick wore off don't tend to be Riot's cup of tea.

Riot would be such a massive step down from other festivals she could get booked at as far as her stage placement and number of people she could play too / how bad it might go over. And in hindsight, her getting booked on WWYF probably only happened because it was a LiveNation event with a projected attendance of 85k. Nothing to do with genre.

i dont have much opinion on avril as an artists or speaking to her punk-cred or whatever but she would go over gang busters at riot, she practically had the female pop punk market onlock for a solid 4-5 year before paramore came around. (a time when many riot attendees were having their musical tastes formed)

would riot be roasted endlessly from by everyone who thinks she doesnt fit? yes, but they get that shit every year anyway. but she would also pull a massive crowd & get a great reception from her wayward fans, even if they are mostly "i liked her in middle school' fans. I guess tomorrow will tell.. though can we all promise that if she is on lolla, we dont mention her again until the 2023 speculation thread? haha

  20. Don’t be mean if this is a little out-there but is it possible that the Lollapalooza lineup is actually the Riot lineup? #avril4eva

If Avril Lavigne winds up playing Riot Fest I will buy somebody on this thread a copy of Let Go on Discogs.

    EDIT: Not an LP.

    Things have changed.

If Lolla were anywhere else but Chicago, she'd be doing both. Guaranteed.

I don’t care about her playing, but I don’t think it is any worse for Riot Fests’s cred than having Machine Gun Kelly last year.

yeah idk. I think i understand both sides of the argument. To me, she's no different than Machine Gun Kelly and i think Riot Fest shouldn't be afraid to sprinkle in a few of these type of acts going forward. There's no reason why a Willow Smith (who i DONT care for) shouldn't be an automatic for riot. I also said Riot shouldn't be afraid of doing acts like 21 Pilots, Maneskin, and BIGGER/rock-esque bands that are currently popular. I can only see NOFX and Taking Back Sunday so many times without needing something new in the mix.

But i definitely understand Riot is really trying not to be a Bamboozle type thing as much as many of us want it to be (or at least I want it to be). I also agree there's a thin line and i'm super pumped there's a festival like this every year. There are HUNDREDS of festivals to see "current cool acts" and i'm not saying i want riot to be anything like that...but 1 or 2 bands shouldn't hurt.

Now from an Avril point of view, of course Lollapalooza helps her brand/exposure/$$$ etc. I guess I was just hoping with the new album and her being at WWWY fest, that she was looking to do a "pop punk cred" type run...which says Riot more than Lolla, but alas that's probably naive of me.
