Glenn Greenwald about to write a thread about why this isn’t like/as bad as the US govt collecting metadata

 

The last few days look like there might be legit growth there, but the big drop and bounce back is something you usually only see with some kind of reporting issue. Worldometers, which usually tries to account for those things is showing a gentler drop and increase, while according to the NY Times there were two days that they didn't report followed by two big backlog days. So, yeah, the little uptick at the end (which is still actually pretty steep if you compare it even to Omicron) is a bit concerning, but with the data issues it could just be a blip there. Definitely something to watch out for, but not enough to think a big resurgence is around the corner yet

It’s doubtful that the Mearsheimer thing will get too much traction, but fwiw I liked this thread a lot. The critique from Offensive Realism is really strong and the thread shows how real academics engage with controversial material without acting like a bunch of McCarthyist cocks.

I don’t know if I did it before covid, but in the last couple of years I’ve found myself — in person, on video calls, even in group texts — basically criticizing my own interests and ideas after sharing them. I don’t know how much of it is some weird fear of being woke-gotcha’d but I’m trying to stop it.
