Super cool. I think it’ll need more time to really sink in though

  10. Day 1: Cocteau Twins - The Moon and the Melodies

This was super cool. I’ve only heard a few of their records, so this one really surprised me with all of its ambient stretches! I was really impressed with how much breathing room they were able to create without things becoming super dull. There were times I wished the songs felt a little... thicker? But that’s really not for lack of substance, the tones and layering all throughout were beautiful and leave a lot to chew on

Al is very underrated as one of the great song-reinventors of all time. On Call Me (easily my favorite album of his), he just completely takes apart "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and reassembles it.

The Beautiful South is really great! I'd heard "Song for Whoever" somewhere else, either a cover or in a movie or something. Gareth from Los Campesinos has been on record a few times that Paul Heaton is a major inspiration for his work, and you can totally see it across this. "Woman in the Wall" is a highlight. Unique melodies while still remaining pretty straightforward pop rock. I need to sit down with the lyrics a bit more, as people often cite them as a strongpoint of the band.

Hm I didn't realize that The Birthday Party is Nick Cave's band. I never really vibed with him before. "Blast Off" was a great way to start off the album, but I'm not into "She's Hit". I'll keep going with it

The five songs are obviously meant to flow together as a single long piece, but I put on “I Talk To The Wind” a lot in the winter.

Well this song is cool as hell and totally counter to what I expected. Is the whole record like this?

Edit: “Move On Fast” came on after and kicked my ass. Almost sounds like a Get Back era Beatles song. Going to add this record to my listening today.

I've got Mariah Carey's Daydream today. Blast from the past: I recognize a lot of these songs from being massive radio hits when I was a kid, but I have not heard most of them in at least 25 years.

Good thing it’s like 50 percent hit singles.

I enjoyed it, though the front half is definitely strongly superior to the back half.

Was originally going to listen to Jupiter by Cave In today, but the latest episode of Jeremy Bolm’s podcast has me wanting to jump into the chaos of St. Anger. Will update later, wish me luck.
