  7. America is now in fascism’s legal phase | Jason Stanley
According to the International Center for Not for Profit Law, 45 states have considered 230 bills criminalizing protest, with the threat of violent leftist and Black rebellion being used to justify them. That this is happening at the same time that multiple electoral bills enabling a Republican state legislature majority to overturn their state’s election have been enacted suggests that the true aim of bills criminalizing protest is to have a response in place to expected protests against the stealing of a future election (as a reminder of fascism’s historical connection to big business, some of these laws criminalize protest near gas and oil lines).

The Nazis used Judeo-Bolshevism as their constructed enemy. The fascist movement in the Republican party has turned to critical race theory instead. Fascism feeds off a narrative of supposed national humiliation by internal enemies. Defending a fictional glorious and virtuous national past, and presenting its enemies as deviously maligning the nation to its children, is a classic fascist strategy to stoke fury and resentment. Using the bogeyman of critical race theory, 29 states have introduced bills to restrict teaching about racism and sexism in schools, and 13 states have enacted such bans.

I’m at home so don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but the school district I work for is Mask Optional (we have a crazy board) there are 8 other public school districts in our county. We are the third largest district. Once a month, I’m asked to put together our positive cases vs all the other school districts so our Superintendent can relay to the Board (as he is a proponent for masking)…we include student percent positive rate because all these districts have different enrollment numbers. What’s interesting is, despite being masks optional (where *maybe* 10-15 percent of our students mask) our student percent positive rate is at about 12% (still a ton) but we are much lower than all the other school districts that have a mask requirement - as most school districts in our county are Masks required and approaching 20% or are already above 20%

Also, we are one of the only districts that I know of who send potentially ill students home with at-home testing kits.

This is not an anti-mask post, as I too am a proponent of masks but just wild considering for most of the year (Delta) we were higher than other Districts, but it seems with Omicron, other districts exploded and we didn’t as much. I have no idea what this means other than maybe it points to some of the medical officials who have alluded to regular cloth masks not being as effective for this variant. Our own county health director in a meeting with superintendents last week told us “this virus spreads so fast a mask isn’t going to make a difference.”

Either way, this shit is bulldozing through schools, masks or not.

  10. my school sent out an email today which said “our case counts are so high that we are no longer contact tracing” and “there is very little proof of in-school transmission” in the same paragraph

Every day our son’s school district emails parents to tell us which schools have positive cases. Typically it’s like two a day, maybe three. This was today’s email.

its possible your district passing out the testing is catching cases earlier and keeping people home sooner, so it ends up spreading less in school

Our school district set up free COVID Testing last week for students and staff. Those that were tested last Tuesday still have not received their results back... They're now outside of the 5 day quarantine period and the positive cases don't appear on the COVID dashboard
