They're looking more at the South Africa regions that were hit my Omicron I think

But the US has proven so far that our waves are worse in ever single way, including length lol

 

It's mainly referring to South Africa, but even in the UK the number of cases are starting to drop relatively quickly.

She discusses a number of points though: the protection from vaccines + boosters in otherwise health people, the availability of antiviral treatments, the immunity against more severe variants (i.e. delta) that omicron likely provides.

She also brings up the point that, because the symptoms are generally mild (at least for the otherwise healthy and vaxxed), case numbers are not a great measure of the concern that omicron creates and even hospitalization numbers in the US right now are not entirely reliable because everyone who comes to the hospital is tested, but ~60% of them are there for other reasons.

Overall the case is that covid, at least with omicron, is beginning to look more like the flu, and while do our best to protect the vulnerable against the flu, we live with it every year and don't take extreme measures unless the circumstances become extreme.

Influenza is a respiratory pathogen that typically lands 50 people out of 100,000 in the hospital, every winter. At this point, with the Covid pandemic, we are getting about 3.9 people out of 100,000 in the hospital with Covid, if you're vaccinated, according to the CDC data. If you're unvaccinated, it's 63.9 people out of 100,000.

 

yeah there just seems to be a ton wrong with that line of thinking though

1) South Africa is down from their Omicron peak for sure, but they still haven't hit a new baseline yet. Prior to Omicron hitting they were at ~250 case a day but who knows what the post Omicron baseline will be

2) our post delta baseline was a lot higher than South Africa's. We never even really cleared the delta wave like they did (SA went from 20k cases a day to 250. We went from 160k to 70k). So while there is hope for countries like SA to hit a post-variant period where due to everyone being vaccinated... us is SOL

3) The post delta "immunity wall" didn't protect SA from their Omicron outbreak, so the idea that a post Omicron immunity wall will work seems very optimistic. Feels like its just a matter of time before a we see yet another variant that causes another big spike in cases.
