The hype around the ROH show tonight feels weird because ROH (supposedly) isn't actually dying


While I could see someone like Punk, Joe, or BD showing up it just feels overdramatic because a year from now ROH will be around

I really have great memories with ROH, I was way late to the party but I went to a house show down here in 2016 and it really kick-started my journey into indie wrestling. Also led me to meeting @Henry (and his way cooler mom) for the first time irl when we went to a Supercard of Honor in Lakeland, FL the night before Wrestlemania.

Got to see the Bucks against the Hardys in a ladder match. Incredible match. Hardys surprise debut at Mania happened the next night.


Being able to see Kenny and the Bucks in person at the peak of their popularity down here in Fort Lauderdale was really memorable too. They main evented and you could tangibly feel the electric energy in the air when they entered the ring. Truly incredible experience at a very small intimate venue.

 

My mom has met more people from the wrestling thread than I care to admit.

 

How is it that I always turn on ROH when Kenny King comes on and lose all interest.

 

That outside ladder piledriver spot in this King/Taylor match...yikes

 

Kenny took the worst of that one. Big yikes. That spots shouldn't exist, but I get Shane wanting to go all out.

 

I think there's 3 really strong things running against it coming back. The first is the pandemic...where deciding to run new shows is always going be complicated by new surges, new variants, etc. The second is that their roster is gone and getting even the WWE leftovers is gonna be tough because they just shut down their company (why sign there vs Impact or staying indie?). The third is simply that its probably more valuable to Sinclair to sell the tape library and write off the show as a 2021 fiscal year loss than to actually start it back up.

They did 800 PPV buys just 2 years ago at this time. There's no world where they are anywhere close to profitable. Someone started a brand name from scratch and made it 100x more valuable in the last two years. It'd be truthfully insane to start up again as even AEW, who has infinitely more star power than ROH ever will again for the next decade, cant even top a million viewers.

 

This match is sloppy as hell. They are trying cool shit, but its... not good.

I still can't believe that this "ultra serious guy" EC3 is the same goofball guy with the Andy Samberg gimmick on the original game show format NXT 10 years ago.

 

This "continuous stream of guys doing ROH legend's finishers" thing in this match is great.
