i work in a bank, and i can assure you only old people still go into a bank

 

On food delivery, I usually do pickup, but tried to do delivery from a local pizza place a few weeks ago. Went straight to their website, ordered through there, and there was never any indication it was through DoorDash until I got a text from the driver saying they were abandoning the order because the line at the place to pick it up was too long.

 

I don’t go into the bank because I put all my money into crypto

 

My wife will occasionally ask me if I have any cash and I just give her a confused look and ask what year it is.

 

I'll still take out cash at the ATM when I need it for a dispensary. But it looks like most of them are starting to take cards no for no additional fee so that might go out the window soon too.

 

I try to avoid using cash but some places are cash only or you just get a water bottle or something and feel guilty charging $2 on your card if it isn't a chain

 

my barber only takes cash or venmo so i'll go to an atm for that but otherwise i never use cash

There was a time in my life where I felt weird about using my card to buy a 2 or 3 dollar item until I realized I was being a fucking idiot.

Yeah a lot of places actually do this and it's kind of infuriating

 

Second part, fair. First part, confused, does using cash do something for small businesses that a card doesn't? Legit curious.

Also want to be clear, was being serious in my post, there really was a time in my life I felt weird about it. That part was true and not only me being a dick.

 

Generally there's about a 3% transaction fee to use a card, so for small purchases, a lot of small business have a minimum $5-10 purchase to use a card

It's also why a lot of places don't take AMEX because their transactions fees are even higher

 

I really wish I made it a point to use cash more instead of credit cards with small businesses. I'm terrible at it.

 

I mainly use the bartering system

 

There’s a corner store down the street I use cash it because they require a ten dollar minimum which I rarely ever hit and even when I do I just use cash anyway. But there’s also a 711 down the street I frequent and it’s all card all the time. Right now where I’m at in life though no one trusts me with any cash and I don’t have any money of my own so my girlfriend just gives me 2-3 dollars at a time on cash app when I need to go get a snack or a soda or something

 

Huh. You know, I never really stopped to think about why some places don't take AMEX before. I also don't really use/know of/encounter small businesses in my area so I've never come across this kind of situation. I understand now, and that makes sense.

I guess I should probably add some context to my previous statements too. The reason I ever felt weird about using a card to pay for a single item is just because I felt kind of weird using my card to buy one thing, not because of anything related to the transaction fees and etc.

It's not just the transaction percentage. It's usually a small percentage OR a small fee (~$0.25 - $0.40), whichever is higher.

 

If my dispensary took card I’d never have cash on me

every time ive been to legal states ive used cash at the dispensaries no matter what. i try to use cash for my vices when i can tbh. no one ever died from being too careful

 

The dispensary by my place takes card but there’s a three dollar fee which sucks but beats walking another block to my banks atm for no fee
