I paid forty dollars for one of the Collab gem bundles and got Rem through that roll. I am embarrassed, ashamed, but also satisfied and don't feel like I wasted my money in a weird way. It's a free game and I've gotten at least forty dollars of enjoyment out of it over the past months so I think it's fair, but that's only because I got what I wanted. If I had spent the forty and the gacha machine gave me nothing in return I would feel completely angered and would have deleted the app. That's why I don't like gacha.

I think Genshin is gacha, but not nearly to the extent of most gacha games. It doesn't hinder your progression and it often doesn't feel cheap.

Firstly, super jealous of your Rem.

Gacha is an interesting experience because it's very much "your mileage may vary" no matter what game you play. No one has the same experience, and that's by design, because of the randomness of the gacha. Also because of the variety of player that exists.

For example, another game I play is Danmachi: Memoria Freese, based on the anime. I have spent some money on it, but nothing too egregious and primarily because I'm a collector and want to get everything I can. I haven't spent money trying to build a perfect team or get further in what players call the "metagame" of PVP.

I think it's perfectly possible to play through all the story content that Danmachi has to offer without having to pay a single dime. Danmachi gives enough freebies and currency to be able to rack up a healthy supply of characters to make up a team. You may not be able to three star every level, but you can at least get through the core game without running into a wall.

Guardian Tales, on the other hand, has a clear wall. I've been able to play all the side stories they've put out since I started playing, but I haven't been able to progress in Level 11 of the main story because of a huge difficulty spike that presumes you've already built up a formidable team of fully powered heroes.

It's pretty goddamn unfair, but then again some people have been building teams from the start and are looking for that challenge, so it's more for them than for someone like me. Still unfair, but I do totally understand where it comes from, and it is still possible for me to progress without spending money. It's just going to take a lot of time and effort.

And then there's Date A Live: Spirit Pledge, based off the anime. This is the one game I play that I've spent an embarassing amount of money on. I don't regret it, because it means I have every character except the newest ones (and Inverse Tohka, who still eludes me), but I will also go to my grave before I tell anyone how much money I've wasted on it.

The worst of it is that there's really only one Spirit that matters: Queen, who is so overpowered that the developers more or less design new content difficulty around her. People still progress without her, but it takes an enormous amount of effort, and believe me, it is impossible to build a useful Spirit to full power without spending money.

Not to mention the fact that they have had like five collaborations in the span of one year, with no chance that we'll ever see those collabs again, so you either get them when they show up, or you don't.

And it's not like other gachas where you have a wide variety of characters to choose from either. That's the other problem. In Danmachi, there's like fifty Bell Cranels. In Date A Live, there are only three Tokhas, four Origamis, two Manas, and two Kurumis. Everyone else is one and done, and there's maybe 20-25 characters total. Compared to other gachas, that's nothing.

I realize this post is getting really long. I could go further but it's probably better to just cut it off here. To summarize, I treat gacha as a necessary evil to endure to enjoy content that I love, and some games handle it better than others. As annoyed as I am about Rem, I'd actually put Konosuba in with Danmachi as being reasonably fair compared to something like Spirit Pledge.

I just hope the devs are serious about the collab coming back in the future, so I can get another crack at Rem.

  8. I got the notification that Horizon Zero Dawn on my Steam wishlist was $25, but when I googled it I found it for $15 on CDKeys; I don't think I've used this site before, the key activated just fine. I've been wanting to play this for such a long time, Ashly Burch voicing the main playable character for once.

Having never heard of CDKeys, I did a little research on who they are. According to Reddit, they're what's known as a "grey market" website.

Have you ever played an RPG where you can buy things in one town and then sell them in another town and earn money by exploiting the regional pricing?

That's what they do, but in real life. They buy keys from authorized sellers, exploiting regional pricing to get it cheaper, and then pass the savings on to you when they resell them on their site.

It's totally legit, but apparently people have had the odd scenario where they've bought a key that was already used and had to request a new key.

  11. A good chunk of my steam games are from CDkeys. Never had an issue personally.

CDKeys is basically the equivalent of buying used games from Gamestop or Ebay. Sites like G2A are more suspect

I don't think I've ever had any issues with, whatchamacallits, third party websites? When games that are activated elsewhere. Green Man Gaming, GOG, Direct2Drive, Humble Bundle. Most of my backlog of low priority games consists of purchases from those sites.

So much of my backlog is from GOG and Humble Bundle it's kind of ridiculous

I mean, I explained it in my post. If you read it and still don't understand, let me know and I can explain further, but I think I explained it about as well as I could.

You didn't mention these sites, but I actually bought Aggelos from IndieGala and instead of a key, I got a weird error message. I also bought Shantae And The Seven Sirens from GamersGate and got a used key. In both cases, they corrected the issue, but it can definitely happen is my point.

    I feel this.

Picking GamersGate as the name of your game marketplace is some pretty poor branding lol

My apologies, I overlooked your post. Appreciate the help, I don't play the general types of games most in here do so I don't know the terminology.

  24. Nier Automata is one of those games that for me elicit such a strong sense of awe and push the boundaries of what a game can be that it makes me sad when I hear someone didn't enjoy it.
