Years late to the party, I picked up a Switch with MK8 yesterday. What other games do I need to check out? I've got my eye on the obvious with Smash, Breath of the Wild, and Dread, but I'm curious to hear others' input.

Yeah, BOTW and Odyssey are by far my favorite Switch games. Animal Crossing is great too, if that's your kinda game

Oh, Super Mario 3D World is also a great one. Luigi's Mansion 3, too

 

Hades if you havent played it on other platforms.

Fire emblem three houses

 

People are going to cover the obvious ones so I'll add if you like mysteries/visual novels then you can't go wrong with Famicom Detective Club.

 

As far as "essential" exclusive games go, I'd say the list is basically (in no particular order):

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Metroid Dread
Link's Awakening
Astral Chain
Bayonetta 1 + 2
Tetris 99
Splatoon 2

Obviously if you've already played any of the games that are ports/remasters, disregard those.

For big non-exclusive games, Monster Hunter Rise and Octopath Traveler are two big ones. In terms of indie games, Switch is the best place to play games like Hades, Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Celeste, Dead Cells, etc.

If you're open to buying used, the one I just bought was a great deal on the heels of the OLED release. But I'm planning to play docked 90% of the time, so the console's screen wasn't as important to me.

 

Get the OLED. Accept no substitute.

it's f-zero on all the drugs.

I am having a fucking blast with Paper Mario Origami King. Nothing will top TTYD for me but this game really does remind me of it at times, and the writing is genuinely funny and clever for the most part. Definitely some surprisingly mature themes too

It seems really long too, I have quite a bit of playtime in and I don't think I'm that close to the end

 

A lot of people didn’t love that game but I agree with you big time. Made me laugh quite a bit and it was a joy to discover each new section of the game. Plus I thought the art looked great too.

 

I’ve only played Paper Mario 64 and Super Paper Mario. I would play TTYD but I’m not paying eBay prices for it
