New song got me to listen to PL again and shiver is still one of the best songs ever, I have such a visceral reaction to the bridge

The new song is fine. Very by the numbers for them, which isn’t bad at all, but it’s not really impressing me knowing what they’re capable of. One standout is vocal melody and lyrics which are gorgeous as always, but wish there was another verse or a more dynamic bridge or something

This is a damn fine cup of coffee.

Gorgeous song. It actually made me turn off Thrice for a few minutes.

I personally really love it, the 7/8 sort-of-cathartic & constant rhythm. It sounds safe maybe, albeit the vocal melodies in the verses are amazing, it's very good!

Wow, I really liked this. I’ve never listened to Gates before even though they’ve been recommended to me for years. This song really reminds me of the band Weaver at the Loom. Does anyone hear that?

is this song representative of more of their music? What other albums should I listen to of theirs to get into them?

I'd say if you're a fan o Weaver at the Loom then definitely start from "Parallel Lives". It does have some resemblance (I'd need to get back to some WATL, it's been a long time, but I loved it too). "Bloom and Breathe" is more in vein of Thrice and Moving Mountains, whereas their latest LP has a wider range of influences going back to bands like Jimmy Eat World or Copeland even.

Your profile pic is Moving Mountains and you haven’t listened to Gates? Man oh man I wish that could be me getting into them for the first time

The early EP’s deserve love too!!! You Are All You Have Left to Fear was a staple in college and those songs hold a lot of meaning for me

My first exposure to the band was actually in my high school’s music club, my teacher had brought in a big box of assorted indie/self released CDs and told us to pick out whichever ones we wanted. YAAYHLTF was in there and I thought the cover was cool so I took it and the rest was history

The first time hearing them it was an exclusive premiere of their debut EP on ap.net actually! ;d ;d just knew it's a new band with Lydia's guitarist, and it was exactly the right moment for me when I got into a lot of post rock bands, I also already liked Moving Mountains etc., but Kevin's vocals were really a fresh adjustment to all that new territory for me, I remember it quite well and wouldn't skip their EPs in learning their discography as well ;D all in all if someone's a Copeland or Weaver At The Loom I'd start with their newer releases.

    Got a light?

I think I may have discovered them through audiotree or through the moving mountains thread and someone recommending them, I haven’t heard the first EP but love the rest of their releases a lot. This label they are releasing on seems ultra small, curious why they didn’t end up going with some of the others in the scene but I don’t know much about how all that works

Yeah they all kinda sound like this. Imo it’s like moving mountains’ whole discography played at once. I would start at the beginning tbh, with the sun will rise ep, and move forward through the catalog

heading into fall is the best time to hear this record the first time. One of my favorite covers too.

Can everybody give me your favorite gates jams? I know they don't have a huge volume of music, but still curious.

  18. The build up and climax in that one remains incredible. Blew me away at the time.

All amazing songs listed but they really don't have an extensive catalogue, so still think just listening through their albums is the way to go. If you like one song, you'll probably dig them all.
