Funny that homie left me on ignore when I said this way back when, but all but confirmed the massive jolt of ecstasy they get from stuff like this. Go get a real hobby dork.

    Perpetually Tired

Me checking this thread for the first time in a week or two: "Oh there's like ten pages, there must be some news,"

Me, ten pages later: Oh. Okay. Whatever the fuck that was.

Has anybody else noticed that some voices that would be crucial to keeping an "Accountability in Music" thread going just...aren't here? Because this thread gets so intimidating and cruel that it keeps people from commenting? Or because it's like the same group of folks just yelling into the ether of the internet?

I get it. Things can quickly get off topic when it comes to online discourse, but to have ten(ish) pages of just...whatever all that was? This is not holding anybody accountable for their actions and just bickering about things that we shouldn't be bickering about in 2021.

Honestly I don't know if it's a good thing that it's 2021 and people are STILL passive aggressive on message boards like it's still the late 00s.

I read this thread because I don't always get to see what folks have done, and it's good to know about that because I would NOT be okay supporting artists who refuse to take accountability for their actions. I would rather be angry about bad people in the music world than be angry at people who somehow can't keep their shit together and make this place not as toxic as it is for voices that should be heard from in threads like this.

Anyway, to keep this back on track, earlier I tweeted out that I was excited for the Angel Du$t collab with Tim Armstrong. Me, being the absolutely naive and airheaded person that I am about some things at times, had completely forgotten the Tim Armstrong/Brody Dalle relationship and how toxic that was. It's 2021 and punk STILL isn't a safe space for a lot of people and something needs to be said about that.

You bring up a very good point. Many of the important voices in this thread/on this website, that is those who always brought vital perspective in here, are no longer active on this website. While there are many potential reasons why that may be, this thread is definitely not welcoming enough for those folks to want to stay and continue providing their perspectives when things turn into the mess that happened just a few days ago.

Only after being called out. Otherwise they just would have kept using Steph’s work for free essentially. But hopefully they make it right

She’s making really important and valid points, but I’m wondering how much of that falls on the band and how much of it falls on their management.

  18. I mean shouldn’t it fall on both? Does the band not hire their management? Haha

it might be one parties fault more than the other but also it’s not like Charly Bliss is a huge operation

I didn’t say it can’t be both. But like, how closely are Charly Bliss seeing the contracts being sent to these artists? Are they formal, legal contracts or under the table agreements? Are the artists directly communicating with Charly Bliss or strictly with management? Those are all questions I think of when I hear about stuff like this, not because I want to discredit or devalue artists but because I’m genuinely curious how it works.

  20. For sure all valid

I guess if I were a band or artist using art or photos that I didn’t create I’d make sure said artist is/was fairly compensated

As someone who essentially works at a film and tv label, I can tell you that the key art that we use on our releases is of course vetted by the artist themselves, but they never see the contracts at all, never.

I don't know about this band's label though, just saying from what I know.

For sure. It’s not a good look and I’d sincerely hope from here on out they are diligent about making sure the artists they work with are paid on time and fairly.

I feel like artists are too often taken advantage of in the media industry. Like, how many artists are told to submit potential drawings that aren’t compensated? Or those merch design contests where only the winner is compensated (or worse, just given merch/other perks as a prize). The obvious way to fix this is to just…pay all artists who make art for you but that’s not something a lot of labels and bands will do.

Also I misread and didn’t realize that they apparently posted that image multiple times after failing to pay at the rate they agreed on during the commission? Gross.

I’m still curious about the role management/labels have in that sort of thing, because if you take Charly Bliss at their word, they had no idea there was a problem. But of course they could be lying, and of course not knowing doesn’t excuse the impact it had on the artist.

Kind of what I figured, and I imagine this is the case for a lot of (if not all of) bands
